EDUCATION BOARD

■ -> TO-DAY'S MEETING-. The monthly meeting of the Ota go Education Board was continued tins morning, those present being Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), J. Horn, M.P., G. W. Wood, It. H. Todd, G. Livingstone, J. Smith, G. K. Graham, J. H. Wilkinson, and Hon. D. T. Fleming. ATTENDANCE OFFICER'S REPORT. Mr J. E. Ryan, attendance officer reported as follows for the month :—Tne attendance at the city and suburban schook is at present affected to some extent by illness, principally diphtheria, and chicken-pox. An epidemic of the former trouble lias broken out in the Port Chalmers District High School. An examination of the pupils last week by the school medical officers showed there were about sixteen of the pupils suffering from diphtheria, and that there were also liftv-three " carriers "an the school. On visitinu the school on May 10, I found that out of 410 pupils in the primary _department, only about 2C(fhad assembled. The school committee therefore decided to close the school for a month. £o far as diphtheria is concerned at Mosgiel School, there were no fresh cases reported, _ and the attendance was improving. Thero have, however, been a few cases reported from some of the city schools. Chickenpox is also prevalent* in various schools, but the attendance, apart from the pupils affected by illness, is very satisfactory. The report was adopted. APPOINTMENTS.

Burn, assistant of the Palmerston District High School, who is retiring after forty years' service, than*iii.tr him for his work during that period. The chairman said that "Mr Bun) b;.d been a country, town, primary, and secondary schools teacher, and had set a very high standard indeed.

APPLICATIONS. Tdie Musselburgh Committee Applied for a gitmt for draining the grounds and asphalting. The estimated cost was about £173.—1t was decided l to carry out the work by tilio board's workmen, the committee to pravid-o a third of the cost. The Alibamy Street School Cor.iniii-ttce made an application- for painting the wolls of Standard V. and Plaindard VI. rooms, repair to floor of lobby, painting walls of main lobby, .repairs to step alt infant room. The- architect did not favor pointing. He recommended repairs fo spouting, downpipes, and gutter outlets, and new water service to janitor's house. The last-named-it-em would cost about £5. An estimate of other. repairs was not available. A blackboard was also required.—Tiho architect was given power to act. The Moray Ple.ice Committee •an-p'ied for repairs to concrete tank mid cleancng out.
