CONCILIATION COUNCIL
PAPER MILLS EMPLOYEES, Tho Commissioner (Air W. H. Haggfr) held a- Conciliation Council sitting to-day m connection with the paper mills employees’ award. Tho application for a now award was filed by the New Zealand Paper Mills, Ltd., and counter-proposals were submitted by tho Dunedin Paper Mills Employees’ Industrial, Union of Workers. Messrs H. L. Holamoro, W. Ross, and -A. ,S. Cookson represented tho employers, and Messrs L, F. Evans, J. Birch, J - . K. M’Donald, and A. Lawrie were tho union’s assessors.
Mr Cookson. saM that tho introduction of new machinery in tho company’s mills at Mataura and Dunedin necessitated a reclassification of tho workers to some extent* That was tho principal reason for the application. The wages offered by the employers were practically tho same as aro at present being paid. The union’s counter-claims In regal'd to wages were for increases of from 2d to fid an hour.
The matters of hours of work and wages were being' discussed this afternoon.
