THE TRADE OF FRANCE
GREAT EXPANSION RECORDED. COST OR LIVING FIGURES. Press Association—-By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 26. The ' Morning Post’s ’ Paris correspondent states that tho returns for 1923 show that France’s imports were valued at 32.614.000. francs—an increase of 8.684.000. francs as compared with 1922. The exports were _ valued at 30.431.000. francs—an increase of 9.052.000. francs. Tho exports of manufactures increase by 3,961,000,000 francs to 16,232,000,000 francs, and the imports of manufacturers increased by 301,750,000 francs to 435,000,000 francs. Tho imports of raw materials increased by 14,044,000,000 francs, largely owing to the low purchasing power of the franc. Meanwhile tho cost of living is advancing by leaps and bounds. Food that cost 100 francs in 1914 costs 345 francs today, clothing 392 francs, ligating and heating 350 francs, and other necessities 400 francs. Rents have ou-y doubled. Exceptionally heavy French purchases of cotton and wool in January, when the exchanges began to soar, make a further increase in the indent figures inevitable.—A. and N.Z. Cab'e.
