AN OLD MAN’S OFFENCE?. [Per United Peess Association.] WELLINGTON, January 16. An octogenarian named T. C. Williams, alias Harper, alias MTvcmde, pleaded “Guilty to everything” when charged on four counts of obtaining money by falsa pretences, and also to two of attempting same. The total of the false cheques drawn was £276. The money actually obtained was £32. In one instamw.accused told a monumental mason that' his wife had just died, and he ordered a tombstone worth £T?O. Ho gave a cheque for £125, and went off with £5 change. Accused had a record of twenty-five charges of false pretences. Ins list dating back to 1890. Ho was sentenced by Mr Riddell to six months’ imprisonment on themajor charge, and to three months’ on the minor charges, the sentences to be concurrent.
