THE LUXOR TOMB

CARELESS BUILDERS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, January 15. The special correspondent of the ‘Daily News’ says that the latest investigations at Tutankhamen’s tomb show that jerry building and skimping on the part, of undertakers were not unknown arts even in the time of the Pharaohs. While every precaution was taken at the workshops by marking the section so as to carry out the architect’s design, and the craftsmen did their work skilfully and with utmost care, the builders of the tomb were guilty of negligence. Some of the sections occupy wrong positions, and no attempt was made to remedy the errors, but they were simply wrenched into position. This forcible iaming of the sections increases the dismantling work. There is another error in the roof of the middle faction. Whereas the front and rear sections are decorated with gilt vultures facing the door, the figure on the middle section faces rearward. The discovery of joiners’ debris between the sides of the shrine indicates haste or a lack of supervision, jusifving the assumption that after the sarcophagus was closed and the more important objects were placed in position according to ritual and tradition, the Court officials and priests left the erection of the shrines and disposal of the funeral furniture to the undertakers’ men. and thev skimped the work. —Sydney ‘ Sun ’ Cable.
