CALEDONIAN SPORTS

SOCIETY'S ANNUM. MEETING. GOOD SPOUTS m FINE WEATHER j i Ideal weather favored the annual sports meeting of the Caledonian Society at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday after noon, but tho attendance of the public was disappointing, there being only about 300 present. A good programme of events, comprising running, jumping, cycling, dancing, and a school bands’ contest, was provided, and in everything was keen competition. The majority o'f the events were for primary and secondary schoolboys, and the society anticipated more liberal support from the parents of these competitors than it received, j Tho two bicycle races provided splendid i contests, reminiscent of the gatherings of the society in earlier years when cycle 1 racing was much more popular. In the I amateur handicap races there wore some i close finishes. Particularly interesting was the 220yds race, in which the first and second men were son and father respectively. The latter was Billy Duff, who uas been a prominent runner here for many year's, and who was just beaten by his son ! lor first place. The manner in which the meeting was conducted was a tribute to tho various officials, who carried out their respective duties admirably. Tho events were all got off promptly, and there was not the slightest hitch in tho arrangements. _ Some diversion was created at the conclusion by a race between two well-known members of the society—Messrs H. H. S. White and T. Gillies. The result was not announced, but the competitors, who had had no training, put up a meritorious performance. The Begg Cup, which was given for competition among secondary schools, was won by Waitaki with 14 points. Otago Boys High School came second with 8 points and Christian Brothers’ School third with 5 points. Tho cup is held for one year.
