SOLDIERS’ GARDEN FETE

The annual garden fete and sale of work of the soldier patients of the Montecillo Red Cross Home and the hospital was hold at Montecillo on Saturday afternoon. The Band of tho First Battalion (Otago Regiment) was present. There was a large attendance of tho public, and the various stalls were well patronised. Afternoon tea was served in a marquee on the lawn, a willing band of past V.A.D.s acting as assistants.

The official opening was performed by the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley), who said that they still had men suffering from wounds, and their presence there that day showed that they still remembered and had sympathy with the soldier patients. They could show- their sympathy and appreciation in a Tangible way by buying the excellent goods so well displayed for sale. Ho was sure they all recognised tho great work which was being carried on by a noble band of men and women in trying to alleviate the pain and suffering so patiently borne by -the soldier patients in the home and hospitals. They could not praise too'much the efforts of those men and women.’

The Rev. V. G. Bryan King thanked tho mayor for opening the function and for his kind reference to the hospital workers. He also took the opportunity of reminding the citizens that every penny from the sales went to the men themselves.
