To urge that repair work to vessels of the Commonwealth Line should be carried out in Australia instead of England, representatives of the Shipbuilding and Dockqre’ Union waited upon the Acting Prime Minister (Dr Page) recently. It was pointed out that the iron trade had experienced very hard times during the last six months and had suffered more than any other skilled trade in the Commonwealth. Nearly every shipwright was out of employment. Formerly over 500 men had been employed a.t the Williamstown (V.) dockyards, winch had now been idle for a long period. Mention was made of the steamer Araluon, which is under offer of rale, and it was stated that on© firm which bad submitted a.n offer was said to be willing to have repairs effected at Melbourne, and the union urged favorable consideration of the tender if it were within measurable distance of others. In reply, Dr Page said that many vessels had been built during the war and after- i wards. The vessels were now "a drug’ 1 on tho market, everywhere. He would convey their representations to the chair- ■ man of the Shipping Board, and ask that favorable consideration be given to the ' matter, if possible.
