THE MESSIAH

Bach, fjlrann, Beethoven, Bpohr. Rossini, Mendelssohn, and others or more recent years, have all composed on the same theme, but no one of them in completeness, in range of effect, in elovafion, and variety of conception has over approached Handel’s music upon this particular subject. Ho seems to have left nothing out. Starting with tho promise of the Messiah, ho then deals in turns with the coming _«>f Christ, His liffo, death, resurrection and triumph, finishing with tho heaven of tho Messiah. To have dealt with such a vast subject in such fullness in one oral orio, to be sung at one sitting, stamps hint as a king amongst tho great masters. We arc grateful to the Choral Society for singing this glorious work annually, and wo look forward to hearing it next week, when it will- bo presenting it at'His Majesty’s Theatre. There are some special attractions this year, inasmuch as tho chorus will not only be the largest it, Jins yet had, but the balance is really very fine, and it has a bass line that will bo a rare treat to listeners. Dr Galway has worked hard with both chorus and orchestra, and the great choruses will no doubt be a revelation of what can be done by regular and careful rehearsal. Mr Leonard Ramos, who cones from .America with a great reputation, is to sing the bass solo, Miss Eva Scott and Miss Irene Hornihlow are the soprano and contralto respectively, and Air Ernest Drake the tenor.
