1.000 DEATHS IN NINE MONTHS. ENFORCEMENT DIFFICULTIES. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. WASHINGTON, October 4. A nation-wide survey based on official statistics and other responsible sources in twenty-four States shows that more than 1.000 deaths have been caused by alcoholism in the first nine months of 1923. The inquiry only covered the most populous centres, thus indicating that the total figures, including the remaining States, will bo considerably higher. At Philadelphia Governor Prcsbot, of Pennsylvania, toured the cafes and saloons to observe the result of a recent executive order closing ] ,300 drinking places in Philadelphia on the ground that they were dispensing alcoholic beverages. 110 found them all doing business and crowded. Ho refused to discuss the next move in Pennsylvania’s campaign against the open sale of intoxicants.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
