BOWLING

[By MEAStmEK.I First genral meeting of newly-elected dub delegates on .Saturday evening next. North-east Valley Club will hold its annual meeting on Monday next. Tim report is very comprehensive, and gives complete details of this progressive club s doings during last season. In no previous term" has such enterprise boon shown, and the clause in the report dealing with tins may be quoted in full During the year rrreat improvements have been made. .1 ho new pavilion was formally opened at the commencement of the season, and it was decided to build an annexe, which was completed in April. On completion a fullsized billiard table was installed. ihe whole of the buildings arc now completed. The members are very greatly indebted to Mr Rhodes (president) for his great fan uncial help, and also for the great amount of work he has done during the year. H has onlv been through his energy and enthusiasm that these great improvements have been carried through to a successful completion. The club has thank a number of members 'for their financial assistance towards these projects.” The financial statement certainly shows a bank overdraft of £462, but, as the report says, when members realise the position—a hue pavilion and annexe, with a billiaid table and piano, and everything paid, with tho exception of the land—the debt is yiut really extensive. Members can honestly say that the club lias bad a remarkably successful and progressive year. The Winter Social Club ami the ladies’ section are nourishing, and great tilings are looked j forward to next season. . At the twelfth annual meeting of Kaikorai flub Mr J. London (president) occupied the chair and about thirty members attended. The animal report was adopted with an addition—“ That the thanks of the club be tendered to Mr J. M‘Gregor for his services as green supervisor.” A slight falling-off in membership was shown, this standing at fifty-two, as against the previous year’s record number of fifty-eight, with the result that the statement' of income and expenditure showed a small deficit. Members were urged to 11 bring along' a friend,” and as a. number of new members were proposed later on there is reason to believe that the coniine season will conclude with tlie balance 'em the right side. The previous year’s balance-sheet showed that the club was in the enviable position of being pracenlly free of debt, the only liability being £39 12s 6d due to the Drainage Board. Prior lo the opening of the past season, however, the pavilion was extended and a new full-size Alcock billiard _ table installed, the expense incurred being met by an issue of debentures and arrangements for hank overdraft. As the value of assets, at a very conservative estimate, is nearly two to one over liabilities, (he club is in a good financial position. The receipts from the Social Club amounted to over £ls, chiefly from the billiard table. It was decided to again enter for the fourrink championship. The number of rinks to be nominated tor the interelub matches was left for the committee to decide. Prizes were presented to winners of club ties as follows Champion singles-J. W. Ritchie 1, J. M‘Gregor 2; champion pairs —A. Morrison and J. Mastcrton (si ; handicap singles, A. M’Kenzie 1, J. t. A rmit 2. The officers elected for tho I year were: —President, Mr D. 4. Millar; | vice-presidents, Messrs J. F. Aimit and ! J. M'Gregor; secretary and treasurer. Mr W, S. Cayzer; committee—Messrs A. MorI rison, R.' Cross, E. .Sunderland, W. J. Ritchie, J. R, Wilson, W r . Webster; andi- : tor, Mr J. Loudon ; delegates to centre, ‘ Messrs I). Y. Millar and J. M’Grcgor; sole selector, Mr R. Tyrrell ; green supervisor, Mr J. M'Gregor; Social Commiti lee. Messrs J. Ramsay and H. Morrison, ' to net with sub-committee appointed from General Committee. As the first president and one of the founders of the club Mr W. C. Allnutt was present. Ho will shortly be leaving Dunedin, and the opportunity was taken to express the thanks of members for tin? interest in the club always shown by Mr Allnutt. The best wishes of the members follow Mr and Mrs Allnutt in their new sphere of life. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of . thanks lo the ladies for their generous , assistance, to the Press, and to retiring I officers.

At the annual meeting of Kailnna Club the report and statement of accounts (a precis of which appeared in this column recently) was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows; President, Colonel J. H. Moir; vice-president, Mr 11. F. Sincock; lion, treasurer, Mr I’. W. Curtis; hon. secretary, Mr A. M'Naughton; committee —-Messrs 11. Duncan, C. Lambuurne, S. 11.I 1 . Mirnnis, A. M’Kenzie, P. W. Seclye, and J. 11. Walker : auditor, Mr F. W. Iloddinott; delegates to centre —Messrs J. H. Moir, J. Allan, and A. M'Kcnzie ; selectors, Messrs S. P. Mirams and J. if. 'Walker; coach, Mr T. Sanders; supervisor of club lies, Mr A. M'Konzic. Votes of thanks were passed to reliving otlicers, lady friends, and the Press. The meeting resolved to send a cable to the New Zealand team in Australia congratulating them on their success. During tlie evening supper was handed round, and Mrs and Miss Minims were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their assistance in this respect. It was resolved to enter four sections for the Saturday matches. An instruction was given (he committee to institute a rink competition during the season, a syndicate of members promising to provide suitable trophies. Succession by descent works well enough in regard to the Throne, but I am not so sure about its applicability to the governance of bowling clubs, since members may think that Mr So-and-So would make quite

a good Prince of Wales, and yet hesitate about putting him into that responsible position if it meant that he must necessarily become King hereafter or else sus-' tain'a snub Having that doubt in my mind. I am rather pleased to find that Hie St. Clair Chib, at its annual meeting last

week, quietly set aside the hereditary principle in the election of president, by nominating for the ofiicc a member who was not in the line of succession. A year ago Mr J. Seddon was the retiring senior vice-president, and as such, in accordance with custom, be was looked on as .sure, of election as president. For private reasons ho stood aside, and the honor went to Mr J. R. Rodgerson, the junior vice-president. At the same meeting, a year ago, Mr T. C. Co till was made senior vice-president and .Mr T. Smith junior vice-president. Mr Coull is now away on lour, so it was expected up to a week or so ago that Mr T. Smith would be made president without opposition. Put some members thought that -Mr Seddon should be nominated, and the ballot showed that quite a number were of the same mind, for, though he could not show himself, owing to influenza, lie was beaten by only three votes. His supporters are consoling themselves with the thought that he will have a show for the presidency a year lienee if ho wants it, for he is now the senior vicepresident, Mr W. Speight waiving any right to the seniority on account of his being nominated first. A well-known Dunedin bowler who keeps in close touch with Scottish authorities has received a letter from Mr D. H. Tay-

lor (partner in the well-known firm of bowl-makers trading under the name of Thomas Taylor). Mr D. 11. Taylor writes : “You will be sorry to learn of the death of the writer’s father. Ho was the principal in this business for almost fifty-five years. He retired only in October, 1321, and, although able to go about, he was really in poor health. Ills final illness was of short duration. Ho was giving us his assistance on Monday, May 7, and lie died on Sunday, May 13, tho cause of death being pneumonia.” Thus a great link with the game is severed. Mr B. H. Taylor has several interesting things to say in his letter. For instance : “ Probably, in proportion to the population, Now Zealand lias more bowlers than any country in the world. ... In comparing the lignum vitte bowl with composition, it is something like comparing an ivory with a composition billiard ball—the composition in both cases is lifeless and makes quite a different game. Wo have no faith in any composition bowl, and as we wish to cater only for tho very best wo are not touching the composition bowl trade meantime. . . . With reference to the comparative bias of bowls used iu New Zea-

land and Australia, tho Australian standard is considerably wider than tho Now Zealand; the former is almost No. 4 and tho latter No. 3. As tho Australian greens are of an entirely different type to those in New Zealand it would probably be unwise for your association to increase its standard to fall into lino with Australia.” Officers for Moriiington Club during the coming season are:—President, Mr D. Ciinningliam: vice-president, Mr E. Patton ; committee—Messrs Brown, Brocklclinrst,, Bell, Connell, Barclay, Wallace, Easton; selector, Mr Jas. L. Smith; delegates to centre, Mr Easton and the secretary ; Tics Committee, Messrs Holgate and Brocklehurst; secretary, Mr Jas. L. Smith; treasurer, Mr J. H. Thomson. St. Clair Club’s new : President, Mr T. Smith; vice-presidents, Messrs John Seddon and Walter Speight; committee—Messrs W. Walls, P. Leadbetter, C. F. Grigg, and R. M'Nanghtou; selectors—(Messrs E. Longworth, T. Smith, and 1). MMntosh; delegates to centre— Messrs J. H. Hancock, H. W. Jones, I). Fustier; auditor, .Mr 0, L. Robertson; treasurer, Mr Langlcv Pope; secretary, Mr- AV. R. Piddingtom West Harbor Club hold a social tonight, when presentation of prizes, etc., will lake place. Otago Club’s postponed annual meeting is fixed, for this evening.
