The Commonwealth Government has promised to donate £3,000 towards the expenses of tho Australian Olympic team _ if the Olympic Federation raises the remaining £IO,OOO necessary. Northern, at Culling Park, 1.33 (Mr Crawford). COUNTY CRICKET. LONDON, July 23. Surrey, in its first innings, made 272 (Fender 73) against Kent (125). Hitch, who bowled brilliantly and with plenty of pace, look seven wickets for 53 rims, hitting the stomps five times. Surrey in the second innings made 262 for seven, and then declared. Fender made 67 not out. Kent has lost no wickets for 63 runs.— A. and N.Z. Cable. CYCLING. A combined meeting of the Dunedin Cycling Club, the'South Dunedin Cycling Club, and the Green Island Cycling Club was held on Monday evening. Mr Laws presided. The meeting was for the purpose of fixing on (he opening date for the cycling season, to make arrangements for a cycling meeting on (he Caledonian Ground, and to further the interests of cycling generally. It was decided to open the season on October 6, when members of all clubs will parade from Dunedin to Green Island. A strong committee was appointed to wait on business men and others for the purpose of getting support for the meeting. The running of a championship road race was held over till later in the season, and may take place about January or February. A medal was donated to the club member who put up the best performance in the Oamaru-Timaru Road Race.
