PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting last , night was attended by tho mayor (Mr J. Watson), Crs Limn, Allen, Borrie, Love, Cable, Asher, Anderson, and Dodds. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr W. B. Steel, secretary of the Expansion League, asked the council to participate in a deputation to the railway traffic manager in regard to improved facilities for suburban train travellers, including tho daily running of an 11.15 p.m. train to Port Chalmers and to Mosgiel. —Resolved to support the Expansion League in any effort to improve the suburban train service. Mr R. D. Veitch advised tho department’s intention to extend the underground cable system to Carey’s Bay, and stated that portion of the street would bo opened up tor that purpose.—Received. REPORTS. Tho Works Committee reported that the slips on the Deborah Bay road were being attended to. A temporary bridge on tho Reservoir road, leading to the sanitary farm, had been erected. Tho committee recommended that the council frame a by-law so that a charge of 10s per annum be paid by all those ratepayers who had a lavatory in their premises.—The Chairman of the committee (Cr Lunn) said that the. temporary bridge to the, sanitary farm bad cost from £25 to £3O. —Cr Anderson asked why the committee allowed tho sabitary 'cart to go round in the daytime. —Cr Dodds objected to the proposed additional sanitary charge, and the Mayor said tho proposal was contrary to the council’s policy.—Report adopted, with exception of sanitary danse, which was deleted.

The Gas and Water Committee reported that a fair amount of coal was in stock at the gasworks. Two water services had been repaired, and a 6in -drain laid to catch leakage on tho reservoir embankment. —The Mayor said that tho committee should see that consumers were satisfied.—Report adopted. HELAYED DELIVERIES. Cr Anderson said that it had been alleged in tho newspapers that the Railway Department delayed the delivery of cargo landed in Port Chalmers. He moved that (he matter be referred to the Railway Department. Tlie' -Mayor said that this was an important matter, and the Railway Department should bo asked to state Hie position. He had been informed that cargo landed at Port Chalmers was promptly delivered in the city. ’ It was decided to refer the matter to the Railway Department.
