SOCCER

POSITION OP TEAMS. Tho following table shows tho relative positions, of the teams engaged in the senior grade competition;—

SEACLIFF v. SOUTHERN. fieaeliff played Southern on the former club's ground. Tho opening stages of the game were very even, but in the second spell tho exchanges wero decidedly in Seacliff’s favor, and they won easily. The final score was t Scacliff ... ... _ ... '9 Southern ... « ... 1 MORNINGTON v. MOUNT ZION. Playc'd on Mornington Ground. Within two minutes Hope shot after a lino dribble and scored. Very shortly M‘Gregor added the second goal for Mornington. Watt and Johnston were conspicuous in Mornington’s attacks. From good following up Newman scored the third time for tho Blues. Watt nearly got another, the ball striking the cross-bar. Thus far tho game was quite one-sided; hut Mount Zion attacked with bettor combination, and might have scored twice but for off-side play, and K. Thomson sent in a good shot that just failed. Richardson and Troscott -were playing well for Mount Zion. Newman shot another goal from a melee, aaid the score at half-time was : Mornington 4, Mount Zion 0. Early in the second spell Catto made a good but fruitless shot. Shortly afterwards he tried again, and from the bank it looked like a goal; but the ball went under tho not at the side. Trescott made a clever save when M‘Gregor shot, and Tiger Thomson (Mount Zion’s goalkeeper! got a round of applause for a very skilful save. Mount Zion attacked, and beat all but Scott. Hall, of the Mornington team, retired hurt. Shots by Hope_ for tho Blues and Neill for the visitors failed, and near the end Catto had to fall out, being lame. This spell was more even, and there was no further score, the final being : Mornington -• 4 Mount Zion 0 Mr F. Rutherford was tho referee. KAITANGATA r. MAORI HILL.

Tho above teams met at Culling Park, which was a trifle on the greasy side. The game which ensued was rather dull, hut was enlivened occasionally by pieces of sparkling play, for which Ivaitangata were mainly responsible. Balk (Maori Hill) and M'Anlcy (Ivaitangata), who distinguished themselves with the New Zealand team in Australia, fouiid themselves once more on opposing sides, and both played well, though Balk was not served very well by his team. Kaitangata held the upper hand throughout the first half of the game, but a goal by Bonnie was the only score registered by them. Maori Hill, on the other hand, played a ragged came. Currie (in goal) and Adamson and M‘Donald (full-backs) were tho pick of the side. Balk, who should have been given much more to dp than was the case, hardly saw tho ball during tho whole game. Tho final score was : Kaitangata 1 Maori-Hill 0 Air Frame -was the referee. NORTHERN v. TAIERI. Tho match between Northern and Taiori —played at Culling Park in the presence of a fairly largo crowd—was of a bright and interesting character. There was not much to pick and choose between tho teams. Northern, however, proved themselves to bo tho superior side. One of the best players on the field was J. Drydcn, tho Now Zealand representative, who has just returned from the Australian tour.

Northern kicked off, and their fastmoving forwards had the better of the opening exchanges, Hanlin (in goal for Taieri) being early called upon to save. The play moved up and down the field at a fast pace, neither side showing any marked superiority. Northern drew first Wood, D. Dryden (inside left) netting with a fine shot from well out. Taieri essayed several strong attacks, but failed to score. Northern notched another goal before the end of the first spell, D. Dryden scoring from close play in front of tho Taieri goal. The second half of the game was closely contested. Northern attacked consistently, and Hanlin proved himself a goalkeeper of more than ordinary merit. The Taieri forwards were finding the Northern defence hard to penetrate, but eventually R, MT.can goaled. Tho final score was :—■ Northern ... ... 2 Taieri 1 Mr M'Callum controlled the game.
