DOCKERS' STRIKE

Negotiations have begun between the unofficial dockers’ strike committee and the Transport Union in an endeavor _ to settle the strike, as tho effects being seriously felt in London.—A. and N.Z. Cable. ' _____ • LIVERPOOL AND MANCHESTER. LONDON, July 18. Thsro has been further trouble at Liverpool. Tho strikers induced 200 dockers on three vessels to close works, alleging that one vessel from Australia had been diverted from Manchester, but tho owners slate that they merely followed the usual custom when a vessel bound for Manchester arrived lato by docking her at Liverpool. As tho Manchester dockers refuse to allow the unloading of fruit which is rotting in tho docks tho directors of the Ship Canal Company contemplate calling for free labor. SMITHFIELD MARKET. LONDON, July 19. Tho porters at Smithfield market, by 103 votes to 65, decided to support tho strike by remaining out of work, but many porters refrained from voting. Meanwhile the shopkeepers’ clerks and salesmen at Smithfield are carrying tho moat.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
STRENGTHENING THE POLICE
LONDON, July 19.
A deputation of tho strikers which, visited the Home Office was informed of tho absolute necessity for expediting the clearance of perishable foodstuffs.
The Covont Garden porters deny intimidation, but they admit that when a man attempted to work to-day he was stripped naked and sent home in a cab for his pains. Extra police are being sent to tho large food distributing centres. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
