UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

I v THE 'MONTHLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the University Council was attended yesterday by t ie Chancellor (Dr Andrew Cameron), the Vice-Chancellor (Mr 1, K. bidey, M-l- I, Messrs L D. Ritchie, J. Wallace, J. W. Scurr. W. J. Morrell, G. R. Ritchie, W. Eudey, J. 0. Thomson, J. C. Stephens J. Renjne, Dr .Fitzgerald, Dr Marsha l. Macdonald, Dr Bonham, and Dr Undo Torguson. COURSE OF ARCHITECTURE, Dr Benham reported on behalf of a special committee that was appointed to look into a request from the architects lor a course of lectures. This would involve appointing lecturers in certain subjects that wore not taught at the University, and it was recommended that Messrs 0. E. Macfio and J. A. White bo appointed, they having agreed to accept the fees paid by ‘the students as sufficient remuneration in the meantime. Regarding the suggestion that the course might trespass on Auckland's special sphere of work, Di Benham stated that a letter had hocn sent to Auckland and a reply; received that there would be no objection. He moved the adoption of the report. Mr Stephens held that the matter should bo carefully considered first, and pointed out that the course could not he put into operation now in tirno for this year. Mr Wallace suggested that they might find that they were duplicating work that could be done by the Technical College. An amendment was referring the matter to the Finance Committee. PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION. A small committee was appointed tc take the preliminary steps in the appointment of a professor of education, as requested by the Education Department. DENTAL SURGEON FOR HOSPITAL. A special committee that was set up to report on a letter from the Hospital Board recommending that . Professor Bell, professor of clinical dentistry, be appointed dental surgeon to the Dunedin Hospital, recommended that the council agree to the appointment of Professor Bell as dental surgeon to the Dunedin Hospital, but that a letter be sent to the Hospital Board to the effect that, as the present payment by the board was inadequate, the* council could not see its way to meet the cost of supplying dentures for any patients treated in the hospital. (Mr L. I). Ritchie opposed the proposal chiefly on the grounds that it would probably necessitate the appointment of tional demonstrators at the Dental School and that it would complicate Professor Bell's position. Dr Macdonald, in reply, pointed_ out that there were others in a dual position, and that it would not seriously interfere with Professor Bell’s work at the school. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Chairman of the Professorial Board requested that steps bo taken to make provision for the teaching of physiology tc home science students in 1924.—Reform to the Finance and Home Science Committees. Ho recommended the award of home science diplomas to Misses Bowbyes, Ar noldson, Robertson, and Stubbs (ap proved); tho appointment of_ Mr S. G, Secular as teacher of descriptive geo metry, at a remuneration of £ls 15s am students’ fees, the fee to be £5 10s (re ferred to the Finance Committee). •• Tho Secretary W.E.A. asked the coun cil to approve of Dr Elder conducting ; class at £2 10s per lecture, and to alio £3O for library expenses. —Approved. Mr G. H. Nash applied for an incrcasi in salary.—Referred to a Finance Com mittee. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported that i had considered three recommendation from the Professorial Board, and rccom mended as follows;—That Mr Barnett h permitted to hold tho George _ Youn; scholarship, together with the senior Uni versity scholarship; that the whole of th advanced Beverly scholarship be awnrdei to Miss C. 0. ‘MTlaffie, provided Mis Spite elated in writing that she did no desire to hold the scholarship; that n> further payment after any that the conn cil might "be at present committed to b made to the holder of the Smoaton scholarship in respect of tho four hours’ teach ing referred to in the regulations, and alsthat tho registrar report as to the posi

tion in regard to other scholarships. The following matters were also dealt with: The chairman and registrar were authorised to act in regard to additional remuneration to Mr Thomas for undertaking temporarily certain duties of the janitor. The question of fitting up a board room in the old physics department was deferred. It was agreed to pay Miss Harris the amount of £1 Is for services rendered account special intermediate examination. It was a*gvecd to purchase from Dr Benson three geological books at a price of £1 each. Requests for increased salaries on account of Miss Turnbull, Mr Jennings, Miss Harris, Mr Gibson, and R. Butcher were referred to a sub-committee for report. A request from four mining students for a reduction of the fee fixed for applied electricity was referred to tho Professorial Board for report. The students state that the practical class is only held two hours per week. Tho report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee stated that Mr /Anscombo wrote on March 26 reporting on works in progress. He stated, with regard to temporary D.C. motor control, that the motor would bo permanent, but that the generator was temporary. He enclosed, prices for bookshelves in Studholme House. It was resolved to accept the price of Blackmors and Weir (£33 10s). Ho stated that a new gutter, was required on tho Hockea Library roof; cost m galvanised iron £2O, in lead £47. It was resolved that the glitter bo put in in lead, that prices bo obtained, and that tho chairman and registrar confer with the architect and act. Tho architect was instructed to report on tho cost of erecting a bicycle shed at the"new Medical School, the timber from tho old bicycle shed to be used. Tho committee considered the appointment of a janitor. It heard the views in regard to this matter of Professor Waters and of tho president of the Students’ Association, and then referred the matter to tho Chancellor, the chairman of the Works Committee, the hon. treasurer, Mt Wallace, and Mr Stephens to report. Dr Jack wrote on March 26 stating there was danger of the basement being infested by rats. Tie suggested that rats could make their way from ono room to another on the hot pipes. It was resolved to instruct the architect to close up the space round tho hot water pipes, and that the janitor bo asked to obtain poison from tho Town Hall and lay it in the basement. Tho following matters were tilsc. dealt with:—lt was resolved to grant Professor Waters tho use of the workshop in tho old physics department, subject to conditions to ‘bo approved by the Chancellor, the chairman, and tho registrar. It was agreed to install a, large sink supplied with hot water in the senior laboratory of tho chemistry department, at a cost of £lO 17s 6d. A request from Dr Malcolm for the installation of a destme--1 tor. at a cost of from £lO to £ls, was J declined-. It was resolved to allocate to Professor Woodthorpe the retiring room j adjoining the lower Oliver class room. Tho chairman was asked to report on a request from the Medical Students’ Association for additional locker accommodation at the Medical School. The chairman was also asked to report on a request from Dr Drcnnan for sundry alterations to animal houses at the new Medical School, and also for some shelving. The report was adopted.
