SO HIT COOK WITH BOTTLE. SHIP'S FIREMAN PINED. The method adopted by a fireman on board the H.urmmi to express his disapproval of the bill of fare provided' by the ship's cook was the means of landing him in the dock at the Police Court this morning, charged with assault. The man was charged under tho name of El Kitts, and the cook, who appeared in the witness box with his head swathed in bandages, wm one Arthur Sharp. Mr Haggitt appeared for the accused Sharp said that on Monday afternoon he was cooking in the galley, when Kitts came in and asked l what was for tea,. W itnoss told* him, but ho “ diciu t seem satisfied,” and hit him on the head with, he thought, a 'bottle The result was that he had been under the caro of the ship s doctor ever since. Kitts was drunk at the time. Dr Waldron, the ship’s doctor, said that had the blow landed an inch further down tho results would have been very serious. Air Haggitt said that accused was a very good fireman when sober, and he had not been in any trouble before. Tho Magistrate (Mr Bartholomew) fined accused £5, with solicitor’s fee £2 2s, but afterwards reduced this to £3 on the captain explaining that accused’s wanes were already drawn upon by tho London Poor Law Guardians to the extent of twothirds, and it would bo impossible for him to . pay the fine before his time was up. His Worship ordered 1 that half the fine should go to the injured cook, and remarked to accused that ho- should feel grateful to the officers for the kindly way he had been dealt with.
