ST. KILDA COUNCIL

THE MONTHLY MEETING. Tho business dealt with by the St. Hilda Borough Council at its ordinary meeting last night was, not of a very important nature, and 1 was disposed of in reasonable time and under peaceful conditions. Thera were present Mr J. W. Dove, (mayor), Crs R. Tolfer, M. H. Seddon, R. M. Mercer, P. CiiroMn, J. Ritchie, S. Garbutt, J. Stenhouse, J. Adam, and E. Longwortb. Mr A. D. Edgar, a former mayor and councillor, was also in attendance. He briefly explained that after a spell , ■j 11 municipal life in the borough ho would bo a candidate for a seat on tho council at tho forthcoming elections. . Messrs A. Smiley and W. E. MfKeich, representing residents of Bay View road, waited on tho council with' a request that the open ditoh in Bay View road from the intersection of East avenue to the intersection of West avenue be filled in. Mr Smiley said that the ditch was a menace to the residents, and he objected to such a_ nuisance right in front of his door. If it was a, matter for tho. City Council or the Drainage Board, tho residents of the vicinity asked the council to forward tho accompanying petition on to the proper quarter. The St. Hilda Council was also asked to give the petilion its best support with a covering letter.—Tho Mayor said that the residents of Bay View road bud tho heartiest support of tho council in their .efforts to alleviate what was, no doubt, a menace in that part of the borough. The council would accordingly bring the matter before the Drainage Board by forwarding the petition on, and it would leave no stone unturned to get some satisfaction for the residents of Bay View road. The Secretary of the St. Kilda Fire Brigade wrote asking for a grating to be placed over tho channel outside the motor-house, for the painting of the fire alarm signs and boxes in tho borough, and for several other requisitions. —The Mayor reported that some of tho requests were now receiving attention, and

that the town clerk would bo instructed' to attend to the balance of the requisitions. The Secretary of the Otago Football Association wrote stating that it had been decided to accept tho council’s offer of a lease of Culling Park for a term of two years at a rental of £ls per annum. The letter was received. . , The Secretary of tho Returned Soldiers Association wrote stating that it was intended to hold a parade and divine service on Anzac Day, April 25, in His Majesty s Theatre at 3 p.m. The mayor and members of tho council were asked to ho present, and also to forward a wreath. A wreath mode of poppies and laurel leaves could he supplied at an approximate cost of £2 25.-The invitation was accepted, and it was decided to procure a wreath as suggested.
