CITY DRAINAGE WORKS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln ycmr issue of March 31 Mr Evans, secretary of the General Laborers’ 1 nifiti, takes up the cudgels on hehslf of his union. and I am highly pleased that the, men working on the drainage works at .'."d-rsun Bay understand that they belong to an arbitration union, and that, according to unionism, it is their duty, not only to themselves, hut to such union or unions, Unit the secretary be acquainted with nil misgovern monts that may occur, otherwise how can he know when there is a breach of the awardi' lam not going to give details of tunnel nr any other drainage construction. as that is a matter for the engineering department, but I have no hesitation in saying that the statement made by the Drainage Board's chairman of works, according to tiie union's correspondents, that the hoard had no man qualified for tunnel work is most ridiculous. I can give details of costs of such work, but seeing if was not an open contract I refrain from doing so. There are. men on the drainage works more capable for such work than those engaged thereon, and those men who never got the chance for the tunnel will be aide to express their views on April 26,—1 am, ole., Aruitji.atio.vist. A-oril 2.
