GARDEN FETE

MANY ATTRACTIONS PROVIDED. The Garden Feto was well under way hv 1.30 this afternoon, and provided the weather keeps up till the evening it promises to ho completely successful _ in spite of tho enforced week s delay, ihe fact that all the profits from the fete wul be devoted to improving tho playing "•rounds of the city should bo enough re secure the enthusiastic and practical support of every citizen who has the welfare of the town* at heart, and tho committee responsible for the organisation of the fete is expecting the people to attend in force and help to make it a success. Tho feto is under the official patronage of tho mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas). Mr R. Bomiell is president, Messrs J. H. Walker and J. Rennie vice-presidents, and there a strong commit©© representative of the City Council and of tho various sporting and kindred bodies of the city. Many attractions are held out to patrons from the time when they purchase ihe tickets that gives them entrain© to the fete and the chance of winning a gold nugget worth £25. There are sideshows, including a miniature race meeting and a palace* of smiles, a tent where refreshments can bo obtained, piping and dancing competitions, and special decorative competitions for the children. Those were all in progress this afternoon. A gymnastic display was to be given by Mr Northey's pupils, and an acrobatic display carried out later by his juvenile class. There was also to bo a dancing display by Mrs Wyatt’s pupils, with Mrs J. Leech as musical directress. An excellent musical programme was provided this afternoon by the Band, and this evening the Kaikorai Band will take their place. On the business side of the fete there aro stalls for the sale of flowers, plants, and seeds, sweets, soft drinks, all kinds of produce, such as vegetables, fruit, eggs, and honey, and a great assortment of other useful articles. All these goods must be cleared to-night, so there is a rare chance for careful purchasers to stock their larders at little cost.

The gardens will ho illuminated to night with colored electric lamps, which will no doubt entice many into the grounds to join in the fun and spend an evening out in aid of a good cause.

Following is a list of the stallholders: — Refreshment tent, Mr J. Brown, assisted by members of the Hockey and Tennis Associations; produce stall, Mr B. C. Proctor, assisted hy members of the Otago Rugby Football Union and affiliated clubs; flower stall, Mr D. Tannock and Mrs W. F. Edmond, assisted by members of the Garden Circle of the Women’s Club; sweets stall, Miss K. Geerin, assisted by members of the Otago Cricket Association, Cricket League, and clubs; ices and soft drinks stall, Mr J). Mackenzie, assisted hy members of the Otago Football Association and clubs; jumble stall, Mo, 1, Messrs A. -Morgan and G. Morrison (conveners), Messrs Harvey, Thomson, and J!‘Arthur (supervisors), Mr N. Brown (bon. secretary), Mr R. Sumner (bon. treasurer), and members of the Opoho Tennis Club; jumble stall, Ko. 2, Mr C. Beeby (convenor) and Mr D. Leslie (bon. secretary), assisted by the Maori Hill Amenities Society, residents, and Ladies’ Committee.
