TUTANKHAMEN’S TOMB
EXAMINING THE TREASURES. PRICELESS RELICS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 27. The 1 Morning Post’s ’ Luxor correspondent states that Mr Howard Carter on Wednesday commenced removing objects from the' tomb of Tutankhamen, the discovery of which is arousing ever-in-creasing interest. Experts from Great Britain and America are assisting Lord Carnarvon’s expedition in the long and difficult w.ork of saving tho contents of tho tomb. The first object brought out was an exquisitely decorated box with inlaid work showing a king hunting lions, the box measuring 12in by 18in. It recalls the highest type of Japanese inlaid work. Tho experts boro the box on a stretcher through the Valiev of Kings to the Tomb of Seti IT., where the contents of Tutankhamen’s Tomb are being examined and cleairSd. Other objects so far brought out are queens’ robes and jewellery, including a necklace of the rarest black amber. An object of priceless value is a large alabaster vase of exceptional perfection, and containing a balm for embalming bodies. Mr Carter describes this as the early typo of vase that Mary Magdalene used wnen she washed the feet of Christ. It will lake many weeks to recover the objects of the first chamber, and the contents of the other chambers in the tomb are still unknown. The evidence so far suggests that Tutankhamen was co-regent with Akhenaton for some time, but on Akbenaton’s death returned to Thebes and re-embracod the orthodox worship of i Amon.—A. and N.Z.
