TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
TO-DAY’S GAMES AT HASTINGS. UNBROKEN VICTORIES FOR N.S.W. LADIES. [Special to the ' Star.’] HASTINGS, December 28. Interest is increasing as each championship nears its conclusion. The chances are that many closely-contested matches will bo seen as the best players win through to the fourth round and semifinals. To-day is beautifully fine, although a merry nor’-west wind is sweeping the courts without occasioning players great difficulties. The New South Wales ladies’ team is a formidable combination, and has continued the even tenor of its match-winning way all along the line. The members have not, up to the present, sustained a single reverse in any championship. Last night they attended the fancy-dress dance in the Olympia Cabaret, and Miss Lance judged the most original paper dress costume. “We like New Zealand very much,” says Miss Lance, “but the weather for tennis is not so good. Over there we play all the year round. The trip has been delightful. We have only been over for a fortnight, and have been living in a dream.” L. France had no difficulty in beating Schadick in three straight sets. The West Const terror could do nothing right, and was playing a shocking game. The county engineer of Duller is nob the man of five years ago, and, although only twentyfour, carries a lot of extra weight, and has sacrificed much of his former pace to sHle. France, playing indifferently, took the first set to love. The six-foot-three man got to something like form in the next, and scored with several fast crosscourt placements, gaining four games. Franco ran away in the third set, and had five games in when Schadick i pened his account with two games before losing the game, set, and match. Miss Gifiy completely outshone Mrs Melody, 6-1, 6-0. Being second only to Miss Nancy Curtis, it was thought that perhaps the Wellington lady might extend the Now South Wales lady, but these hopes were sadly blighted. Miss Gray’s booming drives to the back lino made it only a matter of time.
