WRONGED WIFE’S GENEROSITY
STRANGE BIGAMIST STORY. Before the Recorder at the Central Criminal Conrt, London, James Manuel, thirty-two, an L.C.C. tramcar conductor, was sentenced to twelve imprisonment in the second division for bigamy. The defendant’s wife said that in August the bigamous wife and child came to stay at her house. The Recorder: The woman and the baby? Mrs Manuel: Yes, at my invitation. He came to mo and told me she was nearly starving, and had threatened to take her life and the child’s. I took her out of kindness. The Recorder: What are you living on now? Mrs Manuel: I have had £4 from him in five weeks. I have two babies, one in arms and one two and a-half years old. I am entirely dependent on my husband. Ho has had a dreadful life ono way and another. No ono knows what ho has suffered over this matter. Ho has been so worried, he did not know which way to turn. The witness went on to say that she had been compelled to start tlie prosecution, but she allowed the second woman to remain. Then one night, after the defendant had been allowed out on bail, ho went to her. “I heal'd what they said,” added the witness, “and I lost my temper and turned her out of my house. He then left me.
