At the distance, however, Red Gown, had come through, and headed the field. In the run homo Red Gown won by a length, with Tin Soldier a head away, then Mmza, Lomagundi, and Red Admiral Time, Imin 41|seo.

NOTES BY OLD IDENTITY. Londonderry, Mazama, and IMd Pal dominated the hold in the Hurdles. Red Pal put himself out by his erratic jumping, and Mazama lost his chance by one bad leap, so tho way was cleared for a win by Londonderry—his second over hurdles—but he had a close shave for it, since, instead of strolling in, as seemed likely, ho had to bo called on for a real effort in the last 50yds to stall off Mazaraa’s fine spurt. The brothers Hazlett were both keen after it. &t. Easel faded out after seeming to have a chance at tno last fence. . ~ Wharfcdale tried to wm the Salisbury Handicap from end to end, and got third place. Loughrea ran a good race. _He seemed to be dropping back after half the journey was gone, and then had a say m tho finish; but Pilliewinkie, who was well placed throughout the race, had the upper hand and won nicely. Bosker Boy was doing well up to six furlongs. Bonnie Lake and Carpentier both displayed pace in the Dunedin Handicap, but they had enough of it after half a mile. Eaton Bolls, after running in a backward position, was staying on at the finish—a good sign with a two-year-old. But the race was really between Dinner Bell and Lucinette. I have no doubt that on present form the latter is the better of this pair. She got rather badly chopped out a quarter-mile from home, but when straightened up fairly flew along the straight. Of course, she was lucky to get an opening on tho rails. But if the race were run over again she would bo a hotter favorite than ever. The Otago Handicap was a good race between half the starters. Royal Men was not one of these, nor General Advance, nor Limelight, and these were three of which something was expected. Limelight, the favorite, lay quite in the rear till about five furlongs from home, turned into the straight fourth in order, and then died away. Corn Rigs led all the way. till 100yds from home, and there Deucalion, who had come very fast from the home turn, challenged, and passed to the front without any trouble. Sunny Loch distinctly failed to stay. He was beaten more than a furbng from home, and every time Beale touched him he swerved in. The time was only l|seo slower than the track record made by General Advance. Few races have been won easier than tho Trial Stakes Pickaninny got to the lead after a furlong, and then laughed at the others. Many Kittle was backed eagerly for the Federal Handicap. His followers seemed to think the race was all over*

BOXING DAY GALLOPS AND TROTS

MTvor effected a perfect start. , Battle Scene hit the galloping gait quickest, Bon Spec following, and so they ran to the homo turn, where Many Kittle, who had been lying third, began his run. But it was noticed that ho almost at once floundered, and that Emerson was hard at him. He headed Bon Spec, but could not make any impression on Battle Scene, who ran in four lengths ahead and equalled the track record. Bon Spec struggled on, and got second money.' The stewards held an inquiry concerning some interference with Gay Lad and Frisco Mail in this race. It was decided to caution Deslandes, the rider of Reality. Lovosign was one of the early beginners in the Burnside Handicap, and was in charge before going a furlong. _ From there on ho led to the heating by a length a good second* favorite in Ardour, who had all the worst of the running. Contempt, the favorite, got into trouble at the foot of the hill, was badly knocked back, and did not appear to get going again. Petunia, another well-backed one, also had a set-back, apparently getting on the heels of another horse just before leaving the far turn, where ho was running in a forward position. In the Otokia Welter, the last race of tho day, Hod Gown and Red Admiral between them carried more than half tho total money invested. Lomagnndi and Mirza had each every chance to win, being clear of the field after going a furlong, but they could not last it out. The winner (which was favorite) was not in the first half-dozen ns tho field raced along the back, but at the turn into the straight Mr King's mare had come through, and she registered a nico win. Lady Blissful and Tin Soldier, who ran second and third respectively, a head between them, are stable mates. Elens was making his first appearance after a season's spell. He looked big, and ran as his condition suggested. Many Kittle, in the Federal Handicap, carried more money than any other horse for the day. A feature of the daw’s racing was the excellent starting of Mr M'lvor. In almost every instance -the field got away practically in line. AUCKLAND MEETING. SCION WINSTHE OUP. The Auckland, Racing Club’s Summer Meeting opened at Ellerslie yesterday in fine but dull weather. The Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Jellicoe were present. The racing was good, and tho course was in fine order, despite the recent rain. The totalisator handled a decrease of £7,763 compared with. last Oup Day. Concluding results:—

Our special correspondent wires: Tho totalisator forecasted the result of the Ashburton Trotting Cup with commendable accuracy, the wires ? 1 “ ed horses being first, second, and fifth favorites respectively. , Child© Pointer, tho winner, was turned out in excellent condition, and handled by Dr Warren in the race. She made her run turning for home, and boat Star Queen in the last furlong. Star Queen seems fated to occupy minor places, and her record of late is one of consistency and bad luck. At one stage she looked like heading tho winner, but was not quit© good enough. , , Vilo paced a great race into third place, for at the turn for home she still had a great deal of leeway to make up. Hayseed, Rorke’s Drift, and Ben Mac gave encouraging displays, the first-named particularly doing his best in some time. Prince Lyons was always in the picture, but at no stage looked a winner. After the Ashburton Cup an inquiry was held into the driving of Oratorio, who crossed Ben Mac going out of tho straight. W. Bryce, driver of Oratorio, admitted crossing, but said the horse bored badly. Bryce was fined £lO, Later the stewards met to consider the matter further, and it was decided to warn Mr J. Clarkson that, unless his horse Oratorio was driven properly in future, and under complete control, there was a possibility of the nomination being refused.
