With regard to iigures which have beeo quoted by political speakers as to alleged remission o£ taxation granted to tho banks, 'bankers assert that they era inaccurate. It is pointed out that ior the Union Bank the profit quoted is the result (of the bank’s whole business, most of which is outside Now Zealand. The banis is not taxed in New Zealand cm profits made in Australia and London, It is alleged that the figures quoted for the Bank of New Zealand, tbo National Burnt, and two insurance companies a,re wrong tor similar reasons. Bankers also flfctte that the reduction is being passed on to the public in the shape of lower interest tor overdrafts.
