NAPIER WOOL SALE

KEEN - COMPETITION-PRICES ADVANCE, Tho first wool sale of the season in Napier was held on Saturday, when 14,000 bales were offered and practically all sold under the hammer. Competition was keen, though at times a little irregular. Prices were rather in advance of Wellington for super lots, white average lots wore quite on a par. Compared with the closing sale at Napier last season, the average increase on good cross-bred was about 4d to sd, whilst inferior aK% shabbier wools were easily Id to lid better. Pieces and hollies were Id to 2d better. The wool was extremely well grown and lustrous. The selection was good, and all grades of cross-bred, from fine to coarse, were well represented. Tho principal buyers were from America, Germany, > Japan, and France. Bradford was not in the market to the usual extent, tho limits of the other buyers apparently being too high. There was keen competition from local mills for wool suitable for their requirements. In consequence, the best pieces brought up to lOd, and Southdowns averaged 19d. American competition was very sustained, and their buyers appear to have somewhat elastic limits, far in excess of Bradford, as quite a lot of average wool was lifted by America, whose buyers, it is evident, are showing more disposition to purchase these sorts than in former years. American activity was quite a feature of the sale. Following was the range of prices:— Fine half-bred, average, 17£d to 19jd, Southdown, 18d to 20d.

Medium half-bred, superior, up to 20d; average, up to 17d. Coarser half-bred, super, 14d to l6J,d; average, 10d to Ibjd; inferior 7d to 9-jd. Fine cross-bred, super, lotd to 15jd : average, lljd to 12L1; inferior. 8d to lOd. Medium cross-bred, super, 12d to 14d ; average, to lljd ; inferior, 6,id to Bd. Pieces, super, 7jd to lOkl. Cross-bred, low to medium, 4d to 6id. Crutchings, medium to good, 5d to old ; inferior and seedy, 2d to 4d. Locke, half-bred, up to st,d ; cross-bred, 3jd to 4d.
