PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Council last night was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Watson), Crs Coleman, Jones, M’Lachlan, Luoni, Reeves, Allen, and Lunn. The Works Committee reported that George street and square (had been attended to as usual twice a week. Channels had been brushed and mud tanks cleared in Grey and Currie streets and part of Wickliffo terrace. The sand at the recreation ground had been carted and used to Ifcvel up all depressions, and the balance deposited on. the site of the old dressing shed.—Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that, receipts totalled £177 7s 2d. The Gas and Water Committee reported that the manager at the gasworks had fitted three now services during the fortnight, and was now laying another. His assistant was employed thirty-one and a-half hours at these services, three and a-half hours changing meters, and fiftythree at the works during the fortnight. The water services had been repaired in George street and new angle cock fitted. Services had also been repaired in Scotia street, Bemccia street, and Island terrace; when doing the latter tho opportunity was Liken to scour out the mains in that part of the town.—Adopted.

Cr Reeves gave fresh notice of motion in regard to rescinding permission to erect a soldiers’ memorial in George street. The council wont into committee, and discussed with Dr MTCibbin (district health officer) the matter of the sanitary inspection of tho borough.
