PROHIBITION ABROAD
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—“ Continuance ” says Prohibition is ■a failure in Norway. That is absolutely absurd 1 , because Norway has mover hail Prohibition. Iceland has been farced by Spain to suspend her Prohibition law for one year. “Continuance” calls this the “ fail lira of Prohibition in Iceland,” Quebec never had Prohibition. It io a failure iu the United States, says “Continuance,” yot they have had this “failure" in some States of America for sixty years, and have never gone back on it once. The growth of public opinion {• favor of Prohibition in America is ampl® proof of tlie sucoosa of the “dry" law without coining down to figures or anyth lug of that sort. To cap everything, the people of the United States have just elected a Congress overwhelmingly “ dry." They have gained three seats more than tliey possessed before.—l am, etc., Liberty. November 27. {This letter has been reduced, making it deal only with the points raised foy “ Continuance ” dn his last communication. There ia obviously no use in continuing a discussion in which the com®, spondents do no more than repeat their flat contradictions of each other. As far as wo can ascertain the facts, Norway had a modified Prohibition in war time, and parte of it have been under District No-licease. A publication of the Dominion Alliance of Canada (Ontario branch) doEoribes Quebec as being, from April 1, 1918, to January 1, 1920, under Dominion. Prohibition, which we understand did not effect the sale, though it forebode the importation, of light wino and beers. A. system of State control was later inaugurated. The latest Press cabled results of the American elections gave an increase of seven, shown by AntiSalocra League returna, in the number of those members of the House of Representatives favoring either modification or repeal of the Volstead Act.—Ed E.S.]
