“JUST A FRIENDLY GAME,” REGENT CABLEGRAM EXPLAINED. [Special to the ‘ Star.’! CHRISTCHUiROH, November 25. In reference to the London cablegram re the New Zealand tennis team to play at Roehampben on December 20, the cablegram as it appears is likely to create a wrong impression among those who are not aware of tho qualifications of tho players mentioned. Although the players named might be available, none of them can claim to be in the first flight of New Zealand tennis players to-day. Tho nature of the match is indicated by the following telegram received by the ‘ Star ’ from Mr Murray Kean, secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, in answer to an inquiry as to the connection between the association and the proposed match. Mr Kean telegraphed: “ Our representative, a keen enthusiast, has arranged a t friendly match, New Zealanders versus Englishmen (not Now Zealand versus England). The match is quite unofficial.” The friendly nature of the match may ho judged from the personnel of the teams. F. M. B. Fisher, who is a decided) “old-timer” as far as singles are concerned, will probably be the strongest man among the Now Zealanders. Included in the team is lan Mac Ewan (Fisher's nephew), a son of Mr J. B. Mac Ewan (of Wellington). Young MacEwan, who is only nineteen, was a student last year of the Waltaki Boys’ High School, and was very prominent in lawn tennis there, though beaten for the championship by Llitb (of Auckland). Mac Ewan, who is the right stamp of tennis player es far as height and reach are concerned, left New Zealand at the beginning of this year for the purpose of completing his education at Cambridge. Doubtless he would receive valuable coaching from his uncle, whoso style is quite good; hub it would be absurd to look to players resident in England to provide Davis Oup aspirants, as it would 'be quite unfair to New Zealanders in the dominion, who would have no opportunity to play against them.
VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. In the women’s singles championship Mrs Boydl defeated Mrs Lister, 6-2, 6-2.
