MAULAREN’S XL AT SYDNEY. DEFEATED BY NEW SOUTH WALES. The mutch between New South Wales and MacLaron’a team was continued at Sydney yesterday in- fin 1 out hot weather. Tho wicket was good. Two overs sufficed to terminate the Englishmen’s second' innings, which closed for 121, MacLarcn, ■with 28, carrying his bat for top score, compiled by sparkling round-thc-wickct and Bardslcy opened for Now South Wales, with 281 required to win. Gibson broke through tho left-hander s defence early, and with the board showing 56 Collins put his leg in front to Tyldosley. Macartney and Andrews became associated in a valuable partnership, which was not severed till the total reached 191. Both scored freely all round the wicket, completely collaring the bowling, and although MacLaren rang changes,_ the batsmen proceeded merrily with their mission', the spectators being treated to a dazzling display. Then Andrews stepped m tront of his wicket to Calthorpe, and; six runs later Macartney -pulled Gibson from outside his off stump into his wicket, lour tor 197. Macartney’s total included eight fours and Andrews hit twelve fours. Both displays were without a blemish* excepting for a couple of uppish strokes by Macartney which fell out of danger. With 84 runs still required to win, Holloway and Kippax discriminated between good' length deliveries and loose ones. Kippax, by crisp batting, quickly ran to tho thirties, while Kelleway was satisfied to present a straight bat and movo along steadily. At the tea adjournment the score read four wickets for 206. The Englishmen appeared to be tiring as the result of tho h \b, muggy weather. In the first over on resuming after the adjournment Kelleway found the boundary with a straight hit. After Chapman at cover had intercepted several hot drives Kippax added a single, when he was clean bowled in endeavoring to glance Gibson. Scanos sent his second ball from Calthorpe to point, but the fieldsman juggled with it for a while, and then lost it. The batsman hit two fours past point and fine leg. With six to go, Kelleway found tho loim-off boundary off Gibson, and followed with a single to the on. tocanes despatched the next ball to the boundary, winning the match by five wickets and three runs. Both teams received an ovation from a crowd numbering 5,000, who recognised that New South Wales had a lucky escape from a meritorious fight by the plucky English colts. Scores; ENGLAND.
