ST. KILDA COUNCIL

STREET LIGHTING DISCUSSED. The business dealt with by the St. Kilda Borough Council at its ordinary meeting last night was disposed of in quick time in order to enable the.mayor to preside at Mr T. K. Sidoy’s meeting, hold in the Coronation Hall. The council meeting was attended by Mr J. W. Dove (mayor) and Crs D. Toller, H. M. Seddon, R. M. Mercer, J. Adam, S. Garbutt, <L Ritchie, E. Longworth, J. Stenbouse. Mr T. Ballantyno wrote asking the council to erect a lamp post at the corner of Young and Mills streets. A letter was also received from Mr W. Carr on the same subject on behalf of tho ratepayers of tho neighborhood. It was pointed out that a portion of Mills street was practically in darkness at night time, and was consequently very dangerous. —Tho Mayor said this was a matter which would have to have the serious consideration, of the council before it went out of office. The day of gas lighting for streets was now past. It would be necessary to go into the cost of installing the electric light system throughout the borough. _ They would have to keep topsides with the City Council in all matters, and the street lighting question was a most important one. —Or Mercer moved that the town clerk be instructed to inform Messrs Ballantyne and Carr that the council would attend to the matter after an estimate of the cost of converting the street _ lights from gas to electric had been obtained. The motion was carried. The council granted the following building permits; —Mr A. Idour, to erect a building on sections 10 and 11, block XVII, Musselburgh; Fletcher Brothers, to erect a garage in concrete in Marketstreet; A. Armishaw, to erect two shops on section 6, block VI., Musselburgh; J. A. Orlowski, to erect a stable on section 2, block XLIX., St. Hilda. Cr Seddon brought up the question of o-as rings placed near the beach for the benefit of the' public. He said the rings were appreciated by tho people, and the council should take some steps to place a cover over’ the rings to protect them from the wind and rain. He moved that tho town clerk be instructed to have the rings put in proper order in readiness for the coming season. —The motion was adopted.
