POLICE COURT

Fbidat.—November 30. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, £.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. CASTING OFFENSIVE MATTER. Charles Graham Murray, charged with casting offensive matter in Maclaggan street, wan fined 20s and costs. CIGARETTES AFTER HOURS. F. T. Batt was charged with having on October 25 sold a packet of cigarettes after hours.—lnspector Kirnnan said that h© had purchased the cigarettes from an assistant. Defendant was fined 20s, with costa (7s). MAINTENANCE CASES. Claude Porter was proceeded against for being £4B 10s in arrears on. an order made for the support of his illegitimate child Mr C. J. L. White, who appeared for complainant, said that the amount was largo because there were twins. Defendant was a barman, employed by hia father. The Magistrate: You evidently considered it wise (o bring the case before next month. The defendant was sentenced to three months in Dunedin prison, Porter to bo released on the payment of the arrears. Albert Edward Fuller admitted Being in arrears to the amount of £25 14s in respect to a maintenance order, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, to bo released on the payment of the arrears, the warrant to be suspended for two weeks.

Hugh Brown was proceeded against for an affiliation order Mr C. J. L. White appeared for the applicant, who gave evidence.—The magistrate granted affiliation and maintenance orders, and fixed maintenance at 12a 6d par week, with past maintenance £27 and solicitor’s fee (£3 sa). John Scoles was proceeded against for a, maintenance order in respect, to his son. —Mr C. J. L. White appeared for the defendant, and said that the son was seventeen wars of age, and was at the Weraroa Farm, where he had been sent by the court for certain offences. Evidence was given by the defendant as to his financial position.—Tho magistrate said it was a novel application, and he had not had one like it before him previously. The farm, he. said, should he self-supporting if run on tiro right lines, and he was not satisfied that tho hoy was not self-supporting. The case was accordingly adjourned till 'November 22. FAILING TO JIEG.IST.ETi, For failing to register under the Defence Act Leslie Alfred M'Carrigan was fined KB, with costs (7s). BR-EACH OP ORDER. Robert William Graham pleaded guilty to procuring liquor during the currency of a Prohibition order, and was fined 10s, with costs (7s). in default forty-eight hot:rs* imprisomnent.
