DUNEDIN BAND CONTEST.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l noticed in Friday’s ‘Star’ tho intended progi*immo for the forthcoming Dunedin Band Contest. From information received from on© of the delegates who attended the association meeting at the Nelson Band Contest I was led to believe that the South Island Bands Association intended to encourage the younger players by holding competitions for them at all future contests, but on reading the above programme I was surprised to see that there was no such competition included. Now, what I would like to suggest is that there should ho included xn the programme a cornet solo, -as was held at the Nelson Band Contest, and also a duet competition for all players under twenty years of age. I say twenty because I think there wou|l he a bigger entry up to that age than under eighteen, as I notice that most of the competitors for the “boys under eighteen” solo at the Nelson Band Contest were just about the age limit, if not in some cases over it. Also, when we take into consideration the fact that some of the bandsmen havo been playing from fifteen to twenty years, it is quite plain that it is not a fair chance for young bandsmen to havo to compete against them in a solo competition. My idea- in suggesting the duet competition is that it would encourage the young players in the bands to practice together ? v t their homes, and as home practice is essential and we are depending on mu- voung bandsmen for onr bands of tho lutuve, I do not think the contest committee could do bettor than adopt ray suggestion.—l am, etc., Old Bandsman.
