TEMPERANCE UNION
The monthly meeting of the North-east Valiev branch of the W.O.T.U. was bold in the institute on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Peart (president) was in the chair. A letter was read from the Otago branch of the National Council of Women requesting the Valley branch of the W.C.T.U. to send two representatives to the council’s meetings held in _ Dunedin.— It was decided to hold over discussion till next meeting. At the request of the Dunedin W.G.I.U. two delegates were _ appointed to attend the executive meetings to enable both unions to co-operate in connection with the visit of Dr Mary Armour to Dunedin .in September. _ , After some discussion it was decided to hold a pay-up social on the evening of September 18, and committees were appointed. A motion of sympathy was passed with a member on account of the death of a relative, and feeling reference was also made to the death of Dr J. G. Woolley, who had for so many years championed the cause of temperance in America, It was decided to send a message of welcome to Dr Mary Armour. The President introduced and welcomed Mr Macourt, the newly-appointed organiser for the U.T.R.0., who gave a stirring address with something of practical value to those engaged in temperance work.
