THREE PRISONERS ESCAPE.

ALL RECAPTURED. SYDNEY, August 1. (Received August 1, at 11.55 a.m.) There was a sensational escape and recapture of a prisoner named Steiner, who is .'serving a life-sentence in Maitland Gaol for the murder of a China-man. He secured took in the prison workshop, and after two months’ labor ho sawed through two 'iron bars and' removed part of tho stonework of the window of his cell. Ho knotted his blankets and! reached the ground, clad .in a singlet and trousers. Ho (burst into the -prison store, secured) a quantity of cloth, a- knife, bo<.4P, and) twine,’ anal with grout difficulty scaled tho I outer wall. Ho hid in tho bush, and made himself a suit out of tho cloth. Ho, hid under a tarpaulin on a train, whore the police surprised him. Steiner then jumped off and escaped. Doubling back while the -police were searching, ho throe times attempted to get aboard tho same train while it w-as travelling, and ho narrowly escaped death. A little later one of many police who wore searching for Steiner met him and 1 him with a revolver, and the escapee surrendered' (|uictly. * Steiner in 1919 escaped from Bathurst Gaol, but wa-s recaptured after a short period of liberty.

Soon after Steiner’s arrest two Victorian gaol escapees—Loughrcy (who escaped from the I’ent-ridge Gaol farm under a load of hay) and Higgins were re-arrested at the Newcastle -Salvation Army Home.

[Higgins received an injury to his eye. and under a- pledge that, he would not attempt to escape, ho was taken outside tho gaol for treatment. After this was given, andi when the warder’s back was turned, lie bolted.]
