CITY FISH MARKET
ESTIMATED DOST £4,000,
FURTHER INFORMATION REQUIRED.
The establishment of a city fish market is fully dealt with in the report of the General Committee of the City Council, which states:
A great deal of time was spent in an effort to find a site that was or could bo connected with the (railway by siding. The General Manager of Railways and the local traffic manager were interviewed on the subject, but a site that had been suggested as suitable proved to be out of the question from the siding point of view. It was only after the most careful investigation that the committee reached' the conclusion that there was no option but to adopt a suggestion for the council to take delivery of the fish- at the railway at the foot of Hanover street and transport it to a depot by means of motor lorry. The committee’s later efforts were based on this idea, and after duo inquiry a selection was made of a quarter-acre section in Cumberland street, next to Scurr’s workshop, as the most suitable. The hind is the property of Messrs A. and T. Burt, and an option has been obtained to purchase it within a period of three months for the sum of £2,000. A sum of £SO lias been paid, for the opt ion, which amount is to be merged into the purchase price, or forfeited if the bargain is not completed. The building surveyor has drawn sketch plans of suitable buildings for erection Oil tiro land, tho estimated cost of such buildings being £2,000. Provision Is made for the sale of fish, both wholesale and retail; but meantime neither smoking nor chilling rooms are allowed for. The committee recommends that authority be granted to complete the purchase of the land, andl to make tho necessary arrangements for proceeding with tho erection of buildings in accordance with the building surveyor’s plan at tho earliest convenient date. Tho Finance Committee met yesterday to go into tho question p£ the financial aspect of tho recommendation of the General Committee, and it reports that some further information concerning a. new phase of the question is required' before the matter of providing the finance may be definitely reported upon. In tho meantime, 'therefore, tho General Committee has been asked to furnish tho further particulars required.
