The, Lady Principal reported the total number of girls cm lire roll ns 449. The previous three years sho.ved 590, 049, and 379 reflectively. It was also reported that Misses Loudon and Lawson had entered upon their duties,' and with a full staff a' new classification providing courses as follow had been adopted : (1) With a view to university scholarship: (2) with a view to matriculation and high leaving certificate; (3) with a view to matriculation and a certificate which miuht be issued by the school for proficiency- in shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, and office method. These courses might be adapted to the needs of pupils desiring to enter upon nursing, dentistry, ov home science work, an well as teaching and office work. ’I hey had begun also to develop drawing and art craft work for post matriculation pup,its with taste and tahmt for these studies. Further. that Miss Loudon had undertaken the work of -organising sports mistress with Miss Campbell as senior adviser, various other members of the staff assisting. It was honed that considerable development of the school games and sports would result.—Report received. Mr B. B. Houston wrote expressing pleasure that the school tennis courts were so fully occupied, and asking the board to accept his sorvices_ as if acting as honorary engineer, stating that ho made the request because of his position as president "of the juniors and because he considered that anyone, who had derived gre.A- pleasure from a sport should, so far" as it lay in his power, give the benefit of his experience to others, and so contribute to the good of the game.—Mr Couston to be thanked. The Education Department wrote regretting that at present the Government was not prepared to assume the responsibility in regard to liability for accidents to pupils and teachers. Regarding the question of the board’s responsibility for accidents through (ho negligence of a teacher during the teaching of such a technical subject as chemistry, it was pointed out that in the Ashburton case icferred to the Appeal Court the court emitted the appeal" of the board on the ground that tho board could not be held responsible for tho methods adopted by _thc teacher in the class which resulted in the accident.—Received. The Secretary reported that all teachers had jaken the oath of allegiance as required by section 11 of the Education Act. The resignations of Messrs E. M. Christie, 51.5 c.", and M. F. I’eake, assistant masters in the Boys’ High School, were accepted with regret. The board decided to endorse the application of Mr IT. M. Slater, 51. A., B.Sc., for an exchange of position with a teacher from Great Britain, conditionally. A special committee of the board submitted draft regulations for tho award of the General Harry Fulton sfemorial Scholarship. It was decided to refer tho draft regulations to tho New Zealand Rifle Brigade trustees for their approval.
