RED CROSS SOCIETY

The monthly meeting of, the Red Cross Society held on Monday last was attended by the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (president), Miss Williams, Miss Graham. Messrs 0. B, Smith, E. A. Rosevear, and C. Speight. Mrs H. Lindo Ferguson applied for six months' leave of absence, which was granted. Vocational matters were discussed, but it was decided to defer consideration till next meeting.

The town clerk advised that a field gun, as a war trophy, had been allotted to the Montecillo Home.

A. letter was received from the parents of a. deceajed soldier expressing grateful appreciation of tho society’s interest and kindness during their late son’s illness. Miss Williams reported having supplied an ex-Royal Navy man (a needy case) with certain articles* of clothing; having forwarded a parcel of clothing to an exsoldier in the country, and also to having despatched a number of gramophone records to the soldier patients at Dunstan Hoapital, Clyde. Her Excellencj’ Viscountess Jellicoe wrote acknowledging remittance of £lB 19s, being the Red Cross workers’ contribution to Princess Mary’s wedding gift. In regard to the disposal of the splintmaking equipment at tho Dunedin Hospital. Wellington Headquarters advised that it left tho matter entirely in tho hands of the Dunedin Centro. Headquarters acknowledged the statement and cheque in re Captain Mullineux’s lecture. A Jotter was received from Wellington ro future activities, together with a table of expenditure of patriotic funds, which showed the local centre to be in a most favorable position as regards management. Air Rosevear. who was recently in Auckland, furnished an interesting report of Red Cross activities in that centre. The Evelyn Firth Home, lately erected, provided a splendid place for the soldier patients, numbering twenty. Some of the cases were serious ones, but the Red Gross staff.was doing everything in their power in the host interests of their patients.

The disposal of certain fittings at Woodside was approved, and Mr Smith was thanked for his attention to Woodside matters generally. The matron at Montecillo reported that there .were, twenty-five patients at present in the home, and that everything was working smoohly and satisfactorily. Friends had remembered tho soldiers’ claims in a practical manner by sending in a number of very acceptable gifts. For these tho patients and committee both expressed their best thanks. As the inside of the homo required some attention in minor detail, it was resolved, on tho motion of Miss Williams, seconded by Miss Graham, that authority be given for the work to be done. As the billiard table also required attention, it was decided, on tho motion of Miss Graham, to leave the matter in tho hands of the Montecillo Committee.

Mr Rosevear submitted a satisfactory financial statement, which was adopted, and a number of certified accounts were passed for payment.
