MEETING OF COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting yesterday afternoon was attended by Mr T. K. Sdey (Tice-chancollcsr), Messrs L. D. Ritchie, (1. R. Ritehio, J. W. Seurr, J. C. Thomson, J. 0. Stephens, W. J. Morrell, W. liudoy, J. H. Wnlkor. Prof. Hewitson, I)r Benham, Dr 11. Lindo Ferguson, Dr Marshall Macdonald', and Dr J. Fitzgerald. Dr Andrew Cameron, the chancellor, was absent through indisposition. FINANCE. The Finance Committee recommended that the salary of the tutor in, gynaecology ho £75 per annum,' and the committee expressed the opinion that this should bo Sam by Dr Riley out of his fees.—Dr iloy wrote acquiescing in that proposal. The committee resolved that before doing anything in the museum basement the City Council be asked for a grant. The committee regretfully recommended that a request from Prof. Dunlop for > a half-time assistant bo declined. The committee considered a request from Mr Pindar that ho be granted' the assistance of Mr Moore, vice-principal of the Training College, for the conduct of the education class; that Mr Moore be paid a salary .of £IOO. and that he himself he given a salary of £lso.—ln view of the large size of this class, the committee, after conferring with Mr Pimler, recommended the council to grant the assistance of MrMooro at a salary of £75, and that Mr Finder be given an increased amount of £25. this arrangement to hold good, for one year only. The committee regretted that it was unable to recommend the council to _ agree to the request of Dr Bel! for additional assistance to his department of mathematics.

Tho committee considered a request from Professor Adams that the salary of Miss Turnbull ho increased to £490 ter annum, and that her status he raised to that of lecturer.—Tho committee recommended the council to raise Miss Turnbull’s status ns requested, and that in tho meantime her salary bo increased by £25. Recommended that the newspaper files -bo discontinued. Tin; committee considered Ihe position which would arise in connection with ethnology lectureship on tho termination of the donation from the anonymous donor. —lt was resolved that this committee highly appreciates the services of Mr Skinner, and whilst in the meantime it can make no definite promise, it hopes it may be able to carry on tho lectureship after the termination of the present engagement. The committee approved of the action of the chairman in instructing the registrar to make application to the Minister for an advance in respect of deficiency of tents.

The committee approved of Ihe fiction of tho chairman in accepting an offer made by tho superintendent of the fteacliff Mental! Hospital to take charge of animals for bacteriological purposes if the [diversity pays the sum of £24 towards the eu-ction of runs.

A sub-committee was set up, ccTripling of the Chancellor, the Dean of Die (Medical Faculty, Dr (Macdonald, and Dr Fitzgerald, to confer with tho Hospital Board with reference to the appointment of. members of the honorary staff. The chairman was authorised to _ act in the matter of the renewal of Dunedin CityCorporation debentures. The chairmen of the Finance and Works Committees were authorised to act with regard to repairs to the Beverly Trust' property. A committee of the Chancellor. Mr G. R. Ritchie, and Mr L. D. Ritchie was set up to confer with the president, of the W-E.A., and to report on an offer from the Yen. Archdeacon. Woodthorpe to take certain classes.

Mr L. Deans Ritchie moved the adoption of tho report. Dr Macdonald thought the reference to thee appreciation of Mr Skinner’s services was somewhat lukewarm, and he mpvod that the clause be amended by inserting tho assurance that the council would do its ntmost to carry on the lectureship. Dr Bonham seconded the amendment. The mover objected, in loyalty to the committee. Tho committee really and highly appreciated Mr Skinner's services, hut did not wish to be tied up for two years ahead of tho contribution. Amendment lost and report adopted. It was subsequently decided to refer to the Finance Committee the question as to what is meant by “subject !o yearly confirmation” in Dr Riley’s letter as to gyniccology. WORKS. The Works Committee reported or. sundry matters, including tho following: Mr Anscombo forwarded a copy of a letter from Mr M'Lellan, :n which Mr M'Lellan asked to bo immediately informed of tho water, gas, and electrical bvlailation for the physics basement.—Resolved that Mr Anscombo ho asked, as soon as ho obtained full particulars Lom Dir Jack, to prepare an estimate of tfie whole of the fittings, this estimate to he forwarded to Wellington. Mr Anscombo wrote pointing Cut the council’s liability if Mr M'Lellan were not permitted to proceed with his cnntrni t for the physics building.—Resolved to expedite the work as much as possible. Mr Walker moved the adoption of this report, and it was adopted without debate. HOSPITAL HONORARY STAFF. The report of a conference with the Hospital Board as to the appointment of the honorary staff was considered in committee and amended, being adopted in the form of a recommendation to the Hospital Board that the following appointments be made Physicians—Drs Macdonald, Fitchctt, Moore, and Carma.lt Jones; surgeons—Drs Barnett, Newlands, Batchelor, and O’Neill; gynaecologist, Dr Riley; ophthalmic surgeons, Drs Ferguson and Hall: surgeon for diseases of children, Dr Williams; surgeon in charge of facial and jaw department, Dr Pickerill (subject to his sending in an application); dental surgeon, Mr 0. H. Tait; assistant physicians—Drs Ritchie, Murray, and Moody; assistant surgeons—Drs Fergus, J. R. White, and Lind on (it was further resolved to recommend that, in view of the approaching departure of Dr Newlands and tho promotion of assistant surgeon to acting surgeon, Dr Jenkins’s name be placed first on the list for appointment as acting assistant surgeon); assistant gynaecologist, Dr North; assistant ophthalmic surgeon, Dr.Bathgate jit .was also resolved to recommend that, in view of Dr Bathgate’s length of service—seven years—she bo designated ophthalmic snrceon); clinical assistants in ophthalmic department—Drs Carswell, Rosa, and Cottrell' GENERAL. The special committee set up to select a clerical assistant recommended that Miss Mary Symo Martin bo appointed to tho position‘at £IOO per annum. Tho Director of King Edward Technical College wrote stating that tho fees payable for the chemistry and physics class for C.O.P. students would not suffice for the payment of the teacher, £IOO being required and only £56 14s being available. —Referred to Finance Committee. _ On the recommendation of Dr Pickerill, the Leask silver modal was awarded to R. E. T. ITowat, and the Leask bronze medal to J. P. Forbes. Mr Anscombo asked tho council to consider making immediate application to Wellington for at least £6.000 for the fittings of the physics department. He had not yet obtained the particulars ho required.—Resolved to ask Professor Jack for particulars. Mr G. R. Ritchie and Dr Fitzgerald were appointed as delegates to the League of Nations Conference. ■ The Chairman of the Professorial Board recommended that the diploma of A 0 S.M. in mining ho awarded to R. ifLandreth, and of A.O.S.M. in metallurgy to R. C. Scoullar; also that the diploma of land and mins surveying be awarded to H L. Green and E. E. A. Leach: that tho Taieri Scholarship be awarded to Miss M. Gall, and the Stuart prize m English to" W. W. Bridgman; that Miss 0. o. Greig be registered as having passed the home science entrance examination, and ■Mr A. Turner as having passed the mm-

ing entrance examination Agreed to. The following recommended appointments were referred to the Medical and Finance Committees with power to act: — Tutor in anatomy, Dr H. S. BilldifE, at £75 per annum ; demonstrators in pathology. Mr C. 'S. Hicks and Mr P. P. Lynch, at £lO for the term; demonstra tors in physics—Miss T. C. Marwick, at £5 5s per month, ami M. Macbeth, A. A. Levi, M. Barnett, o’. ’’ M'Haffie, -M. M'Donakl, and K. C. Roberta, at £lO 10s for the session; homo science demonstrators—Misses Bowbyes, Jlitchen, and Brash, at £2 2s for one term only; demonstrators in biology—two at, £lO Ids for the session; demonstrator in mining, one at £lO 10s for the session.

It was resolved that the regulations in re college fees be amended to read as follows :—The college fee shall bo £2 10s, except where the total fees do not amount to more than £4 4s, or where the student is taking only the university subject. lu these cases the college fee shall he £1 ss. The Batchelor memorial medal was awarded to Dt C. R. Burns. The Commissioner of Crown Lands asked the council to consent to a remission, of rent, amounting to £2,5?0 per annum, in respect to the Benrnore Block. —Referred to Finance Committee to report. The Secretary, W.E.A., recommended the appointment of Mr J. Johnson, tutor and organiser, for three years at. £350 per annum; that Archdeacon Woodlherpe be reappointed tutor at Anderson Bav at £6O for the year: that the Rev. C. B. Jordan he reappointed tutor nt Kaitangata at £6O for the year; that the Rev. L. .G. Whitehead be appointed as tutor in psychology nt £6O for the year.—Referred to Finance Committee. The Chancellor reported that. Mr S. T. Barnett had notified his inability to take up a dental bursary, and that consequently the Minister, on his recommendation, had appointed Mr T. G. Fouhy.
