The challenge was made by an announcement that Lewis’s manager had deposited 5,000 dollars as a guarantee that he would meet Dempsey. Jack Kearns, manager for Dempsey, to-night declared that Dempsey was readv to meet Lewis on whatever basis he suggests. A large number of members and intending members were present a\t the annual meeting of the St. and A.A. Club. Mr C. .presided, and moved the adoption of | the third annual report, which congratulated the members on a successful season. Aihe club held nineteen runs and five races during the season. The attendances werp very satisfactory. Morris 1. Field events: R. Ramsay 1, W. Allen 2, The club competed in the Port Chalmers-Dun-edin Road Race, Mr Monaghan obtaining first prize, and Mr MTlroy secured a- prize for first novice. The success or failure of a club depended on the cooperation of its members, and the committee regretted to report that the members did not take sufficient interest in individual training. The financial position of the club was fairly good, and thanks ■were -due to the vice-presidents, who gave liberal subscriptions, and thus enabled a credit balance to be shown. Special thanks were due to the patron (Right Rev. Dr Whyte), President Marlow, and the vicepresidents, and to many' friends, at whose places members were entertained. The report was adopted. THE M’CULLOCH PRESENTATION. A meeting of the W. J. P. M’Culloch Presentation Committee was held in the Overseas Club Rooms last evening, when Mr A. E, Usher-,vood presided over a large attendance, all the principal sporting clubs being represented. The Chairman and other members of the committee intimated that they were receiving enthusiastic support in _ every direction, and the movement promised _to be'more successful than the most sanguine of its supporters anticipated. Mr J. M'Grath was anuointed hon, treasurer.

Mr F. R. Brown, tho lion, secretary, intimated that tho whole of the committee had been supplied with subscription lists.

It was decided to send lists to every sporting and athletic club in the city, these lists to be returnable on April 21. , The,form of presentation was held over, but. it was decided that it should bo made in one of the city_ halls, and all subscribers should be invited to be present. A Kub-committe was ft up to carry out this scheme. The secretary was instructed to officially notify Mr M'Culloch of the movement. Rater in the evening several ■well-known citizens made their appearance, including some from Port, and their names were added to -the committee. It was decided to'hold committee meetings every Friday evening, and all interested were invited to attend and join tho committee. A scheme of advertising was drawn up and agreed to.

ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Otago athletic championships will be held ort tho Caledonian Ground on Saturday next. They will include all distances and field events.
