DR STUART’S STATUE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Yonr report of the City Council meeting,(of course, greatly condensed) unfortunately does not give tho full reply of the chairman to my second question about raising this statue. The question was “ Did the committee obtain any expert advice before proposing to raise this statue 4ft P” Tho chairman at first avoided answering this, as yonr report shows, but when I pressed for an answer wo were informed that tho person advising was a,monumental mason, presumably the contractor. In my opinion tho committee was too hasty in deciding snob a point without tho host independent advice. The statue is a work of art, and was designed by the artist, its sculptor, for a pedestal of a certain size, and any change in tho height may destroy its artistic appearance. This is quite a different question from that of (he sito. Or Wilson’s jibo about councillors not attending to business was very uncalled for, as this question had never been discussed or answered before; in fact, the answer had to bo dragged out of tie chairman. —I am, etc., Host. Gilkison. March 17.
