SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP

ARNST AGAIN -SEEKS THE TITLE,

[Special to the ‘Star.’]

"WANGANUI, March 18. Somewhat of a surprise was created locally by the announcement that Dick Arnst, ex-champion, had lodged a challenge to tho winner of the PaddonHadficld race, to bo rowed here on the 18th of next month. Arnst accompanied this challenge with a cheque for £IOO. It is wed known that Arnst was disappointed with himself at tho result of tho last race, when ho was easily defeated by Hadfield, and ho had put up a much better showing in tho 'preliminary trials. Arnst is anxious to have another go. Ho feels confident that he could turn the tables on Hadfield. He would have put in a challenge after tho last race but for the fact' that Paddon already had one in. Ho intimated then that he would lodge a challenge to the winner of the forthcoming race as soon as articles were signed, and this was efleeted this week. True to Ins word, Arnst promptly responded by lodging a challenge. . Hadfield is doing steady rowing. Ho has not had a pacemaker out yet. Generally, Paddon is usually out twice daily. Hadfield is doing a lot more road and hill work than Paddon. The river work is somewhat interfered with by bad weather conditions. Paddon is troubled a little with lumbago, but now that the weather is hotter an improvement may be looked for. His weight is down to 14 stone. Paddon’s style is good, and exports consider that when ho strikes better form ho will improve his speed and staying power, which latter is likely to bo Ins strongest point.
