FOREIGN MISSIONS

The usual monthly meeting of tho Foreign Missions Committee of tho Presbyterian Church of New Zealand was held on Tuesday afternoon, when there was a largo attendance of members, Rev. Professor Hewitson (convener of the’ committee) presiding.

Tho Rev. W. V. Milne, missionary on furlough from New Hebrides, was present, and reported on his deputation work in the Timaru Presbytery. In all ho delivered thirteen lantern lectures and nine addresses. During his visit he was treated with the greatest kindness, and the result of his visit has been to enlarge somewhat the circle of those interested in the work of the New Hebrides. The Convener announced that an application had boon received from in young man to go to China., and, after learning the language and customs, to return to work amongst tho Chinese in New Zealand.

It was reported that Miss 31‘Ewan is still at Wliarekopac, that Miss James has commenced her Karitano course, and that the Rev. W. V. Milne has returned to his family in Dunedin.

Miss Grace Seymour has gouo to To Whaiti; Misses I). M. Mathew and A. M. W. Astbury have commenced their course in the Training Institute; Mr Harold B. Turton has entered _on his final year’s work at the Otago Medical School. It is expected that Mr Vv'. f.i. liyburn will be able to leave lor India this year. Miss 18. il. Elliott has completed her course, and will probably also leave for India about September. Tiie secretary of the New Zealand 'Student Christian Movement wrote stating that as Air J. 13.. Oldham is unable to accept the invitation to visit New Zealand this year, it had boon decided not to proceed further at present in the matter of a special visitor. The Rev. 0. Miehelsen’s radiogram was read advising of the hurricane at Tonga, and it was agreed to reply expressing the sympathy of tho_ committee, and asking if any immediate help could be given from here. The subcommittee appointed at Inst meeting reported, and, after it was agreed that particularly in vicv of the" destruction‘of buildings by the hurricane the committee extend Rev. W. V. Milne’s leave for live weeks. This will allow details of the damage to arrive by mail beiore Mr Milne leaves, and give him an opportunity of making any special arrangements that may lie necessary. It vas i'inthci agreed, 'on the recommendation of the sub-committee, that a special committee be sot up to go thoroughly into rue question of policy in the Now Ilchnaes, and the following wore appointed Bovs H. H. Barton and G. H- Balfour,'Messrs P. L. Clark A. Burn, -I. Farquharson, W. H. Adams, and a. Cameron. Mcsdamos H. C. Campbell and 11. S. Allan, Rev. W . A- Milne, Dr J. T. and Mrs Bowie. The sub-committee reported _ that they bad considered the application of the' Punjab Council for a grant to buy land for building one or more bungalows, but recommended that, the whole question be held over until alter „n, visit of Rev. H. R. Bnrtnn. or until the arrival of Eov. T. E. RMdle on furlough. Miss Ravn wrote of her experiences in the Northern Punjab and other m.ssion stations. .. , , It is expected that Amn Salmond vie leave on furlough this mnilh. It was agreed to sanction the donation of fifty dollars towards erecting a suitable building for meetings at Cheung Chow, where the Government had granted a. site ; to approve ol Ml A G ; . Wilson’s appointment as treaslirer of the council in place of Rev. Mawson: and to donate 2do do.lars towards the expenses of the National Conference at Shanghai.
