NEW COASTAL STEAMER
ARRIVAL OF THE KYLEBEG.
A now coastal steamer —(ho Kyiebeg arrived at Dunedin late this afternoon i from Scotland via Suez, Bunbury, Newcastle, Nelson, and Wellington. A - grea» deal of interest has locen manifested in the Kyiebeg, as sho has been purchased by the newly- formed Dnneclm-Wanganv.iSha-ping Company for the South' Island-Vv el-lington-AVaiignnui trade. The adyeiiuOt the Kyiebeg emphasises the growing importance of the cargo trade between Dunedin and Wanganui, and she should pro'® a very useful vessel for the service. The Kyiebeg is owned by a Dunedin anti' Wanganui syndicate, and Mi’ Keith Barapay is the local agent. ' The Kyiebeg, which was brought out ■ by Captain S. Holm, is somewhat similar to the Gale (ex Karamu). Her gross ton- ; na c7 e is 682 ? oit* , , length 180 ft, breadth 28.9 ft, depth 13.3 ft, i cubic carrying capacity about 1,000 ton®; I speed lends on nine tons of coal. Bho is fore and aft rigged, with threo polo masts, and is fitted with electric light throughout. Thoro is a raised quarterdeck, with tho navigating bridge 7it above the bridge deck, and the captains room and charthoose k on the bridge deck. The saloon and officers’ accommodation is situated amidships, and the (engineers accommodation and mess room on the raised quarter-dock aba’t the engine casing. The sailors’ and firemen’s accommodation is raider the forecastle on the main deck. There are two large eolitrimming plumb cargo hatches. Tbo ship is pioviacd with water-ballast tanks fore and aft, and in the cellular double bottom. The engines arc situated aft, and : are of the triple expansion surface con- j dousing type, with cylinders 14in x 24in x 40in and 27in stroke. Steam is raised on one boiler, giving a pressure of 1801 b to the square inch. The vessel has been built under special survey for Lloyd’s ; 100 A 1 class. __ 1 With tho advent of the Kyiebeg there 1 will be three companies, with a total fleet of six vessels, engaged in the trade between South Island ports and Wanganui. Tho Canterbury Company has four ; —the Calm, Breeze, Storm, and Gate. | Another company owns the John, and a , third tho Kyiebeg. The Kyiebeg mad© a smart passage out ! from Glasgow, whifch port sho left on ; December 19. After her general cargo has been discharged she will go into dock at Fort Chalmers for cleaning and painting. The vesbd will make her first trip to way parte and Wanganui early next week, sailing from Dunedin about Maich 21. Kyiebeg is a Scottish name, and means “a small passag” or “a small channel.”
