WAR MEMORIAL AT HAMPDEN

A splendid memorial erected _ by the people of Hampden and the district forms a fitting and worthy tribute to the men who made the supreme sacrifice at the Great War. It is erected in a public reserve on the Main road. Ihe memorial is in a conspicuous position, and can be plainly seen by all passers-by. The basement of the monument is a concrete square with steps converging on to the pedestal of rod granite, on which are the names of eighteen men of the district who fell. Surmounting the pedestal is the figure of an angel in an attitude of soliciting peace. The monument, which was built by Mr H. Frapwcll, of Dunedin, cost about £4OO, which Bum was raised by public subscription.
the unveiling ceremony took' place in fine weather this afternoon in the presence of several hundred people. Mr W. L Nicolson (mayor) presided and Sir Thos. Mackenzie performed the unveiling.
