OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting _of the Otago Education Board was continued this morning, Mr J. Wallace presiding. “resignations AND appointments.

The following resignations were accepted :-Donald Mivnro, solo teacher Luggate ; Doris E. Miller, role teacher Mount Stuart; Matilda M. Hull, role teacher Otiako: May Davis, solo teacher, iaumata; David Bell, sole teacher, le Houka; Mabel F. Thwigg, second assistant, Outram ; Mary Ralston, mistress, Jvai-I-orai; Eliza F. M. H, Paul, mistress, Oamam North; Eobina Kirk, mistress, Stirling ; Nora M. Rennie, mistress, Waihola j Win, J. Sparks, supernumerary, Mornington; Ivy B. Lawrence, so o teacher, Nevis. Tho following appointments were made;—John M‘N. Kicolson, head master, Mornington (vice Wm. Davidson, deceased)'; Jessie Popo, solo teacher, Broad Bay (vice Mrs Landrcth, retired); Donald Munro, solo teacher, Goodwood (vice \v. Diehl, resigned); Doris E. Miller, sole teacher, Kokonga (vice M. Hughes, resigned); Florence M. Reynolds, sole teacher, Kuriwao (vice C. P. Dark, resigned) David F. L. Campbell, head master, Pine Hill (vice A. Abernethy, resigned) ; Hercules Cnlquhoun, head master, Weston (vice R. Cowan, retired); Alice Naismith, mistress, Blacks Jvice Edith Homan, resigned); Jeanio W. M Donald, mistress, Mocraki (now appointment); Eliza F. H. Paul, mistress, Onmava South (vice Grace M’Naught, retired); Matilda M. Hull, mistress, Outram (rice A. R. Baird, promoted); Nora Rennie, assistant, Forbury (vice Gladys M. S. M'Leod, resigned) ; Mabel Twhigg, assistant, St. Clair (now appointment) ; H. M‘Q. Johnston, assistant, Tokomairiro (new appointment); Norman Tyrrell, second assistant, Owaka (new appointment) ; Alice Goldsmith, junior kindergarten teacher, Normal School (vice R. Darling, resigned). Pupil teachers wore appointed as follow:— I Thos. Wilson, Albany Street; Eliz. A. Barrowclough, Musselburgh; Janet M. Munro, N.E. Valley; Kathleen M. Power, Kaikorai; Lonsdale J. Harrison, Forbury. Probationers were appointed as follow;—Agnes E. Gibson, Macandrow Road; Edmond R. M'Ara, Mornington; Agnes D. Duncan, St. Clair. REPAIRS, ETC. A number of applications for repairs, improvements, etc., ns recommended by the board’s architect were approved. Other applications were referred to the architect for attention. MUSSELBURGH SCHOOL. The Musselburgh School Committee renewed its application for increased school accommodation. The Senior Inspector reported that tho conditions were much the same as in 1919, ■when the rooms were overcrowded. Taken as a whole, the figures showed a slight decrease. In 1919 the attendance was 100 ahead of the accommodation; now it was forty ahead. - The inspector added that he considered some relief should be given if possible. Some discussion followed regarding the advisability of the establishment of a district high school on the Flat, and finally tho matter of increased accommodation at Musselburgh was referred to a committee consisting of tho town members of the board and Mr Horn to take immediate action. , PURAKAUITI school. Tho Pwrakaniti _ School Committee renewed its application for the erection of a now school on a now site. The committee wrote! that thirty-four children were now on tho roll, and the building was in a thoroughly unhealthy condition! It was resolved, on the motion of tho Hon. D. T. Fleming, that, as tbo matter was of such urgency, tho board find the money for the building of a new school, provided the department gives its assurance that this will bo refunded at a lator date. DEPUTATION. The .Rev. R. A. Chisholm attended as a deputation from tho Dunrobin School Committee, who, he said, viewed with concern the proposed transfer of their teacher. Mr Chisholm read a largelysigned petition .retting out the views of the committee and parents of the district. The Chairman pointed out that the h°'ird was obl'gcd, in the circumstances prevailing in this case, to give notice of transfer, hut that did not mean that tho transfer would actually take place. Tho matter would be considered when the question of the Erliovalo School wag before tho board. SWIMMING CLASSES.

, Mr Brugh moved—“ That in view of tne huge number of deaths from drowniim which occur in the Dominion, this board if) of opinion that the department should: carefully reconsider its decision that no classes in _ swimming and life savin.tr will be recognised 1 for 1922-23 season, with a view to reinstating same or eomo modification thereof.”

This was seconded by Mr Todd, and carried unanimously.

GENERAL,

Iho chairman and Mr Wilkinson were appointed to represent the board at a con erencc between tho Propaganda Committee of tho .League of Nations Union and representatives of the educational Denies ot Dunedin on March 27. the Head Masters’ Association called attention to the nigh price of ' Finnemore’s History and ‘ Pacific Eija&rs,* and protested against such high-priced books being used in the board’s schools.—Reterrod to Books Committee of the board the Dumbarton School Committee re-xiow-od its application for a now school,— It. was decided to adhere to the resolution passed at the previous meeting of the board declining tho application.
