THE PACIFIC PACT

U.S. SENATE DISCUSSION,

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright,

.NEW YORK, March 14,

Senator Lcuroot declared that war, sooner or later, would be inevitable in. consequence of the failure of tno Arms Conference treaties. The debate on the Pacific Treaty was discreditable to the Senate because it centred on the question, “Who wrote it?” _ The treaty should bo judged by what it is, not by allegations concerning its authoriship. Tho vote on Senator Robinson's amendment, which was the first test of tho Gtrcngth of the opposing forces in tho Senate, indicates that tho treaty will bo ratified, although it may embody the Brandegeo reservation. The vote showed that the Republican supporters of _ tho treaty aided .Senator Lodge in considerable numbers. Senator M‘Cumber asked why the Administration. was not taking steps to establish an association of _ nations as promised by President Harding. “I hope,” ho said,*" to see the day when the policies enunciated in these treaties shall bo embodied into a compact that will hicliukall the great nations of the world.” Senator Shields said : “ In view of ( the Imperialistic and British Governments’ interest in, the treaty, I believe it. is a more iniquitous than even the League of Nations.’’ —A. anxl N.Z. Cable,

ANOTHER AMENDMENT DEFEATED,

NEW YORK, March 15. (Received March 16, at 9.30 a.m.) Tho Senate rejected Senator Pittman’s amendment pledging tho signatory Powers to a general international conference regarding Pacific disputes by 50 votes to’27. —A. and N. Z. Cable.
