GREB DEFEATS GIBBONS. A New York cablo states that Harry Greb defeated Tom Gibbons m a bout scheduled for fifteen rounds, fins was a surprise to boxing experts, who had unanimously prophesied that Gibbons would win the fight. The result is considered important, for many believe that the winner will bo given an opportunity to meet Dempsey for the championship. The seventeenth annual meeting of the Otago Boxing Association '•vas held in Air [[Divers'* board room last evening Mr T.' M. Gillies (vice-president) occupied tho Cl The annual report stated that during the year eight tournaments had been conducted under the association's J™schct,on to all of which the members had free entry. The contests wore all conducted on correct lines, and tho display of boxinc by the competitors was of a fan-stan-dard. Iho first of tho South Island championship contests will take place at Timaru during the month of July next, tho Timaru Association being responsible for all arrangements. Tho Now Zealand Gounci had opened up negotiations with regard to a visit of a. team of South African boxers. This had tho approbation of tho Otago Boxing Association, and it was felt certain that such a visit would bo distinctly' advantageous t| the sport in the Dominion. Future col tests would now carry the amusement tnV, from which all amateur bodies wore previously exempt. It was felt that all amateur organisations, musical and otherwise, should combine and endeavor to have this unnecessary burden cancelled. Tho committee again recordeo its appreciation for the services rendered by Dr Harrison and tho referee, stage officials, and Mr Foster (treasurer). The incoming commiltco was strongly recommended to initiate secondary school boxing championships. There was no doubt that if boxing could be brought to be regarded as one of tho regular _ athletic pursuits of tho secondary schools it would bo of immense benefit to tho sport. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said it must bo very grrifyin* to members that the association had materially strengthened its position Curing the vear. At tho various contests which had been held the boxing had rt-t.n clean and free from anything unpleasant, and tho whole arrangements had reflected credit on all concerned. He hoped the association would be represented at tho championships at Timaru, for at these contests the representatives would be_ selected for tho New Zealand championships. Regarding the visit of the South Africans, ho said that this was being looked forward to with considerable interest, and he felt sure that tho sport as » whole would benefit. During tho past ;oar an endeavor had been ma do to encourage the pastime in the schools, and no doubt tho ! success which had been attained in this direction in the Christian Brothers' School would lead other schools to take up tho matter. Mr H. H. S. White, in seconding the motion, spoke in high commendation of the manner in which tho various tournaments had been conducted during the year, and said that if future meetings were as well managed the success of tho sport in D lined in was assured.
