IRON MANUFACTURE
BIG OPERATIONS AT ON AH AKA.

WELLINGTON, July 22.
Tire Minister of Mines has received some interesting information concerning progress operations .at Onahaka, where preparations are being made by the Onahaka Iron and Steel Company for the manufacture of iron from the New Zealand Ore Company, which proposes to make pig iron from the lijnonita ore_ in the Parapara district. It has acquired the blast furnaces and plant formerly erected at New Plymouth for smelting iron. This furnace has been enlarged and set up at Onahaka. Tire iron ore is a surface deposit, and is brought to the furnace by aerial tramway over a distance of a mile and a-half. 'The top terminal of the aerial is cut into the limestone face on one side, and into the iron ore on the other. This conjunction of required materials is stated to be unique. Experts' estimate that the ore will not cost more than 2s a ton at the smelter.
