Monday, February 28. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) WEEK-.FND “ DRUNKS.” A male first offender was fined 10s, with tho alternative of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Alexander 801 l was lined 20k, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness, and 40s, in default fourteen days, for breaking a prohibition order, Bub-in-spector Murray staling that this was tho third breach of the order. Accused had a. bottle of beer in his pocket when arrested. A RECKLESS DRIVER. Corning from tho r<vccs at Wingatui on Februaiy 9 William MT/achlan, saw-miller, of Tahakopa, was stated by the police to have driven his motor car through Green Island at a speed of about 30 miles an hour. Constable Wooton said he went into the middle of the road and held up his hand, but defendant took no notice whatever-. There wpro matyr other cars on tho road, and defendant passed them all. Arthur Harold Carrington pleaded not guilty to charges of riding an unregistered motor cycle in Princes street on February 1. and of riding at a speed dangerous to the public.—Constable Parker estimated the speed at fifteen miles an hour from Manse fir Dowling streets.—Defendant claimed that the transfer of registration from the previous owner of the cycle to himself had not gone through owing to a clerical error at the Town Hall. —For riding too quickly defendant was Hired 20s with costs (7s), and on tho other charge was lined 10s with costs (7s). For allowing his horso to wander at Cavcrsham, Arthur F.don, who did not appear, was fined ss, with costs (7s). IreHIGEIIY. William Scobs was charged with (1) forging tho name of J. Lindsay to a cheque for £5 IQs on the National Hank on April 24, 1920, and causing Christina Rigby to act upon it as if it were genuine ; (2) forging the name of W. Fernie to a. cheque for £8 on tho Bank of N.B.W. on April 50, and causing William Buchanan to act upon it as if it wore genuine; (5) forging the name of A. Thomson to a cheque for £l2 on tho Bank of N-Z. at. WaLhola on August 12, and causing .John Edward Carvalho to act upon it as if it were genuine; (4) receiving £8 from Alex. F. Oheyno on xtngnst 14 with intent to defraud, by moans of a valueless cheque for £8 10s on tho Bank of N.Z. at Invercargill. Chief-detective Bishop said accused had intimated that he intended to plead guilty, and consequently the four charges would bo taken together 1 . Christina Rigby said accnsed called at her brother’s shop, Main road, N.KV., and asked her if sbo could cash a cheque for £l2. signed by aMr Galder. Witness telephoned Mr Calder, and, finding tiro cheque genuine, cashed it. On tho 24th accused called again, and asked witness to cash a cheque for £5 10s. This was done. by. witness. On tire following Monday accused rang up to say them was something wrong with tho endorsement of the cheque. Defendant arrived at the shop with another man, who gave her tho £5 10s for tho cheque. Arthur Albert Paapo, licensee of tho Oban Hotel, said he knew accused, for whom he had previously cashed cheques. On April 30 his barman, William Buchanan, caslred a cheque for £8 for accused. The cheque was paid into the bank, but it was found that accused had no account. Accused must have “ bluffed ” the barman into cashing the cheque.
